Discovered the source..

The source of the mysterious plastic pieces in the oil pan turns out were coming from the camchain guide. After pulling the cams today I discovered that right where the manual camchain tensioner touches the chain guide it was completely destoryed. This solves the mystery of why tiny pieces of plastic have been showing up in the oilpan for months.

Which side of the guide was destroyed? The chain side, or the tensioner side? I would think that the chain side would indicate the adjustment was too tight, the tensioner side would probably mean the chain was too loose. Too loose would Allow the guide to constantly bang against the tensioner rod, too tight would have the chain grinding against the guide. Would like to avoid the same thing happening to me, as I probably run mine a little looser than I should.

This also explains why I've had to constantly keep adjusting (tightening) the cam chain tensioner (because it was coming apart). I think it was an overlooked defective part that should have been replaced on the last rebuild and it just got worse and worse until it failed. The chain itself was severely kinked and worn out it doesn't move freely or loosely; it binds up on itself.

Looks way to tight, did you drop your pan when you found plastic in there? but that would not have shown then,

It was adjusted by hand ever so slightly, very little tension. If you're thinking I over tightened it you'd be wrong. The first two times it was adjusted was by Lee Shierts who did it at the track for me and at Maxton. Over the course of a couple months it would loosen and make more and more noise so I slightly adjusted it some more. The reason it was going out of spec is that the guides were damaged as you can see and became progressively worse over time. It shouldn't have a hole in it, the surface should be flat at the point where the manual tensioner contacts the guide. Once the piece began to break up, it constantly went out of spec. All this is obvious now since it's apart, but it wasn't so obvious at the time. I would have needed to pull the valvecover and used a mirror to see this happening. I don't like the footprint the manual tensioner leaves on the guide, the surface area is too small and may have lead to distortion. I'm going to replace it with a stock camchain tensioner. I suspect that the camchain is worn out because of the deterioration of the guides which caused distortion and bending of the chain itself.

Bergie, You may be correct. When I took my 11 apart, I found that they had stripped my oil line on the right side of the engine! Nothing I could do about it because it was 8 years later!

yep your right on man, I thought that on the end of those were to small. and I was just saying that by the looks of it (the damaged pix) it looks like you tightened the shit out of it.... I did not mean it to sound like you did, only that it looked like my buddy "Chad" (some of you know him) tightend it... I saw that guy strip the end off of an axle... good luck on the rebuild!!

You guys wouldn't believe (or maybe you would?) what else I found!! I was very upset when we found it but I've calmed down now. I will put it all into text this week and post, right now I have a few questions that need to be answered before I can gather all the facts.
