1270 or 1290
Im looking to make a change. Do you guys have any input on either the 1270 or the 1290? Ive been doing some kit research and there are alot of options. Im also considering doing the valve spring upgrade while apart. Thanks in advance. Chris

I'll let Doug speak for himself but I believe the walls are too thin on a 1290 that's why Muzzy sells the 1270. I think Addison zx12 had a 1290 that blew up. A 1320 with a new cylinder block is another option. I think the 1270 runs about $1,200 and the 1320 about $2,800.
Hope this helps.

Before we step up to the billet block i think we should wait and see if Entropy gets ever gets his bike running again??
Your definately going to run a bit cooler and be a tad more reliable with the 1270 but if its put together right the 1290 should hold up just fine.I think your pretty much using that bike for the track right?and then it will most likely come apart to get freshened up every year right?

This bike is for the track only but can still hit the street for the once in awhile cruise. Im not sure I want to tear it down every season and check it. If the 1290 is on the edge of destruction im not sure I want to go that route. I talked with Coby Adams today and he said either one would take a 100 + hp shot if done right. Once again I dont think I want/need that much power..LOL..Anyway if the 1290 kit is proven and will stay together that is the way im leaning.

It IS running, and running sweet! I will solve the hot starting issue, although at 255-260 psi I can't expect it to act like it did when it had 65-70 less hp.
A tip for you folks who go way into the motor because of some small repair. Look CAREFULLY at the cases, both alignment of the main bearings and the thrust surface...

The 1290 did blow, but it was because the #3 cylinder exhaust valve actually broke off & fell into the cylinder. Taking out the block, head, & Carrillo ROD!! Best cause that we could come up with was the STOCK exhaust valve springs fatigued & allowed the valves to float causing contact with the piston top causing the kaboom. Engine had over 17,000 miles on it, over 10,000 with the 1290 kit installed! Finally, got the crank back from falicon & it is now a 1380. 1290 +4mm stroke.

after my crank got straightened by APE (went from .003 to .0002) it was apparent that the main bearing housings were NOT in alignment; i.e. the cases were warped. The crank would subtly "rock" when it was layed in its bearings/case. The thrust surface was also worn; not dramatically, but enough to make Kevin nervous. So... New cases, $890!

How fast have you been with your 1290?...Is it an MTC piston kit?

1290 should hold as long as its built right.....Carpenter does alot of them.
karl, so is that why your oil pump shaft broke? Think it bound up in there and snapped??? I just got my crank with carillos installed! Sweetness! Head studs and all the goodies, just need some more money now!

Been using a 1320 billet and a 5mm stroke with over 6000 street miles for over a year now.

no way to tell if the cases got warped before or after the rod snapped, but looking at the bearings, the last event didn't do em any damn good.
