Sims Motorsports sets Bonneville records at the world finals....

Congratulations to Richard Sims and Mike Garcia.
The 1340 stock bore stroke busa moved the record from 214 to 219.9 mph this week. Its putting out high 220's with non oxy erc spec fuel. On Q16 it would be mid 230's at least.

Also the big motor bike went 224.9 I think it was. They had tire spinning issues, they didn't have any weight on swing arm at all.
The motor is putting out over 270 hp at 4600 feet of altitude at Scott Horners shop in salt lake city the day before with a non oxy spec fuel. The same package puts out 296 hp at 400 ft altitude on Q16 or 315 hp on the MJP dyno. Both have Competition CNC's head and cam packages.

They also set some naked records with both bikes. More details to come.........

WOW!!!!
Congrats!
Putting 5mph on Fred Vance's record is awesome; yr head is REALLY getting it done.
I'd love to see what it could do with Q16 or some other oxy fuel.

I entered RustBucket in the MPS/F-1650 class so we could run on Q16 rather than the ERC fuel required for the G class.

Jim,
do you know how much compression Richard/Mike are running in the 1340 motor?
It seems JohnnyCheese has seen some very disappointing results from Q16 where the motor doesn't have real high CR.

(i can't even imagine how fast they's go with titanium rods and small pins...)

And an extra 10cc's.

Jim, did you ever continue development on that port design that you and I were testing a few years back on the 1000?

Im very interested to see what CR they are running too.... got something planned for next yr
Karl, can you define "not really that high"?

Scott,
You have to ask JC about where he has had negative results w/Q16, but with octane = 116 i'm not surprised you need "high" CR to take advantage of it.

Thanks guys. I have put a lot of R&D into these head and cam packages. We have found some substantial power in areas that we hadn't developed before.

Johnny Locklear is running one on the Area 51 bike that just beat Cobra Commander at MIR in the mirock grudge race.. Area 51 is one of, if not the, fastest no bar bike on the planet right now. We'll see who races area 51 at Valdosta next weekend.

Karl, we have stock bore and stroke busa customers with a similar head and cam combo putting down over 230 hp with a mix of mrx01 and Q-16. Yea we have seen many times, Q-16 will make less power than mrx-01 if the engine doesnt need the 116 octane fuel. The bike does have high compression thou, so it needs to run a mix. The pistons are very custom and the compression isnt as high as you would expect.

Tim, yes we did more testing with the inflection porting. We tried it on a busa head with great results. It eventually led to the development of another head and that head led to the head thats on Garcias engine. Its amazing how much timing is taken out of these engines when the tumble is so extreme. Maintaining good homogenization started to become a problem so we had to address that also. Preventing the fuel from "spinning" out of suspension became a huge problem with erroneous A/F readings. Eventually we solved the problem and the BSFC dropped like a rock and power shot up all while exhaust temps dropped.

Scott, until you get over 15 to 1 q-16 isn't really needed unless the head is modified in such a way as to hurt mixture motion.

Bonneville records are hard to set, congratulations to all involved. This a Kawasaki site and I own a ZX14 and my name is on the 1650cc Production record holder which is a ZX14R owned and ridden by Jack Broomall at 205.6 mph. Fred Vance's 214 record was set three years ago using a stock crank, rods and pistons. Our second engine design in the same category as Garcia's (without a long tail) holds the record at 233 using Q16. If you want to be impressed there was a "car" at the meet (a highly modified Triumph TR6 sportscar with a blown chevy small-block) that went 380 MPH. That is halfway to the Sound Barrier. LSL

First of all congratulations to Mike and Jim, a job well done. We just have to work harder to go faster. When I set that record I had OEM fairing. And no we wont be using anything but Carpenter head and cams. The motor that set the record, using ERC 102 octane unleaded gas class legal gas. The motor is now in another bike I built this year. It is making 235hp on VP mr12.. As Larry said OEM, gen2, crank rods and pistons. Oh yeah Brenda Sue ran 202.7 naked on it at Bonneville.
Again congratulations to Mike and Jim.

Same Richard Sims from the Sims and Rhom days? If so they machined their own Ti Rods from billet 20 years ago. They always had very fast NA stuff even back then.

Richard took on my 2000 intruder lc 1500 today, i had no idea who he was, nor his claim to fame, but after doin some research, i am blessed to have this man working on my bike!
I came to him via "other dude" and can say that he made me feel like it was me that was gonna do 220 on MY bike. well, after talking and "searching", i believe my bike will blow some doors away!! BACK OFF ZR-1!!
