bummer day at the track

I raced yesterday at the NMRA opener with Red "Redbull" at LA County Raceway in Palmdale. I can honestly say that it was my most confusing day at the track. I quickly got over the sucky performance of the bike due to the altitude. (3300 ft) But, I never did get over the solid (about 20-30 mph) crosswind and the inconsistent traction there. I raced in two classes: Super Gas & Pro ET. (I know I should be too fast to run in a 9.90 class, but remember TFA? )

The left & right lanes were totally different. The first couple of runs, I spun the tire worse than I ever have. I felt like I was doing a rolling burnout half way down the track.

To compensate, I dropped the tire pressure by 1psi. The next run, I hooked up too well and bogged severly off the line. Huh???!!! The rest of the day, I was like WTF??!!!

It was a crapshoot from then on out. The first round of Super Gas, I got eliminated because I guessed wrong again and bogged off the line with too much traction. Then I got eliminated again in the first round of Pro ET because I spun the tire off the line and caught a nice stiff gust of wind that sent me waaayyy too close to the wall. My timeslip only showed my 60-ft time because I don't think I was even on the track the rest of the way.

Yup, another learning experience. I'll let Red tell you how he did in the 60" class racing for the first time in a while without a wheelie bar.

By the way, on the drive home I started thinking more about the lock-up clutch. I know it would have kept me from bogging, but would it have helped the no-traction runs also?

Ask ZX12R about the luck he's having with a lock up clutch.... Wait and talk to him first... Then buy one...

Thats racing just keep practicing it will get easier and better...

Lock-up Clutchs

There is a big difference from what Bergie had and what I have. Very nice piece but by far "BOLT ON" and go. Not saying thats what I was expecting. Time will tell

Question 1. Ask yourself if your clutch is slipping on the top end before buying a lockup. If the answer to question 1 is yes, continue. If no, then don't bother going to question 2.

Question 2. Ask yourself if your $600~800 spent on a lockup (depending on brand purchased) is going to actually make you go faster? If the answer to question 2 is yes, continue. If no, don't bother going to question 3.

Question 3. Ask yourself if how much patience you have and if you can keep your temper under control when your new lockup breaks between qualifying and round 1, or in the burnout box before a final round, or on the road 6 hours away from home. If the answer to question 3 is yes, by all means buy a lockup. If no, don't bother...

Thanks for talking me out of it guys! I was just grasping at anything after my first totally confusing day since I started drag racing. Hopefully I do better in two weeks at the next race in Fallon, Nevada.

I totally disagree. A lockup clutch does alot more then just keep the clutch from slipping on the big end. Yes it takes patience and alot of time but i believe the benefits outway the effort.
