Good Day at the track and need Info...

Ok so I put a slick and bar on the ZX12 and took it to the track Saturday (our first T&T day).

Took it easy on the first couple of passes and then let it rip and ran a 9.75, 9.76 and a 9.72.

Well then Chris say take that stupid stock can off and run it, so I did. And boy what a diffrence it made, first pass was a 9.55, 9.68, 9.66, 9.45, 9.62, 9.41 and a 9.48.
I was trying diffrent launch rpms..

Ok So now the question I have is what are some of you running for gearing on a 12 with a slick and bar?
I'm running a 16/46 now, so what do I jump up to in the back? 48, 50, 52 what the magic combo???
I know that Wannabe and me can't be the only ones running a slick and bar set up...

Thanks DR JOE

Joe,

First of all, great job first time out with the bars!

Now, so that you don't have to look it up again, I'm running a 16/48 combination. That feels perfect for me, but I'm planning on switching to a 17/51 after I wear out this chain.

If your results are anything like mine, expect to drop another couple of tenths with the 48 on the rear. If I remember correctly, you're foot shifting. Don't worry. That still leaves you plenty of time to get your foot up there to shift.

Now, if I could just lose some weight, I'd be able to run some better numbers....

I was also running into a 20+ mph head wind on top every thing.. But it was fun... I can't believe that you and me are the only ones running a slick and bar....

I've got that setup too. Best time so far was a 9.71. I'm running 17/48, but will move to a 16/48 or maybe a 71/50 before the season starts.

Yeah, that's kind of surprizing to me too, but I'm really glad that I went with it. My reaction times are finally in a respectable range now that I'm just sidestepping the clutch.

You were riding into a headwind too? Dang, Joe. How much to you weigh? I hopped on the car scale with all my gear on and was surprized to hear the 240 lbs. I told them that my l was surprized to find out that my helmet and leathers weighed 60 lbs.

I average about 170lbs last year I got down to about 160lbs.

Thats the same thing I said in Denver in 2000 when I put my ZRX1100 on the scale it weight 540lbs and I about had a cow.... No wonder 600 were running better times than I was....hahahaha

I'm going to E-mail Rickey Gadson and ask him what gearing should I run...
Don't know who else to ask....

The M/T slick has 81" circ....the OEM tire is "about 78"...
Looks to me that if you KEEP the 16 on the front...you can go up to a 50 on the rear with the slick on there...
The 50 would be perfect for a 3rd gear 1/8-mile at 120+mph and..."over 150" in the 1/4-mile in 5th gear...
My calcs. tell me that you could even get away with a 51 but I think I'd go 50 to be safe...

Oh ya...
We DO have a M/T slick for John's bike now but I have only run it in the 1/8 mile...WITHOUT changing our 17-51 gearing...It was OBVIOUSLY geared taller with the slick and we didn't bother experimenting with the gearing since our 1/4-mile track (Gville) was closed for the year when he got the slick...
After I install the DryShot...we WILL put the slick back on but expect to run 160+mph...so our gear will be diff. from what you need for your set-up...

If you get a 50 tooth it should work good with a 16-front for the slick AND ALSO work well with a stock tire and 17-front
