quote: JE custom Pistons set #716554 ordered apr 8. 2009 from Brian
used new forging style, has cross bracing under dome, thicker skirts, other stuff, casting 985M, 6 gm heavier than before
Much sturdier pistons.
Previous pistons would lose .001-.0015" skirt diameter after very little use.
the new style holds up VERY much better.
I always tried to start out at .0018 - .0022 -ish
with the old style pistons the skirt deformed to the point where i had up to ,0040
this is the newer style I was talking about on the other forum

I believe he was running around 15:1 with a seriously milled head, not sure what it would be with a stock head

i was running as high CR as I could get (up to 16.2) while still keeping PTV a lil less than catastrophic w/ CL's around 103/103.
Head was milled about .060, Quench around .030.
Note that my pistons were custom based on the forging Scott quotes, the ones you get "off the shelf" are different.

i just went over to my garage to check on the used pistons that came with the muzzys block
they are forging 944M but they are not all in the greatest shape so i am getting 4 new pistons for the build anyway. Are the custums much more expensive then the regular?
thanks for sharing

Customs aren't hugely more expensive, but you gotta know exactly what you want. I had pistons with valve pockets made exactly to fit my combo, give highest CR possible, while not hitting valves.
.
Honestly, my advice is don't go down the VERY expensive path i did looking for a few NA hp.
2 years and 26 complete builds to go from 210hp to 240hp...
56 trips to the dyno.
Sold my beloved 12, built a Busa.
275 NA hp 1st trip to the dyno.
283 NA hp 3rd trip...

entropy,
How much faster have you been on the Busa? Just curious. That is about 40hp more and better aeros, right? Didn't you go high 2teens or low 220's on the 12?

dakota,
the best i personally got outa the 12 was 218 in 1.5mi with a tailwind, right after that Doug meyer got a 222, before that day the fastest NA Kawasaki in the world! was 212mph (UK).
best my 12 did in the mile was 208 also with a tailwind (doug & i both hit 208 that day)
On the Busa with a lil headwind, i've hit 226 in 1.5mi, 220 in 1.0mi.
I had a 10 year obsession with the 12, loved it, learned to build motors..
But the Busa is a pure fukken freight train, and it fits my 6'3", 230# TeamFatAss better, more room in the cockpit..

hey ent or doug, will my stock pistons and rods hold up to the stroker crank and ported head and be dependable? i have a whole lot of passes with no troubles and i would hate to screw that up past the known zx12 issues. i have been racing this bike since 2003 and i was that guy that rode in the rain to get there if there was a chance there was no rain there at the track> just tires and clutch parts sofar.

That's awesome, I know how that is when you are obsessed with something like that. I have always liked the underdogs.
That 12 was moving for sure and that Busa is amazing. Do you have plans to squeeze any more out of it or is that it for NA?
