strange damage?
So a local guy brought me his bike to work on. needs to get it fixed and wants to do upgrades at the same time. he ran it low on oil, and was doing about 200kmph (closed course im sure:P) and he said it felt way down on power all of a sudden, and then locked up. Im thinking rod bearings gotta be toast as hes telling me this.
i drained about 1 quart of "gold fleck" oil out of it before pulling the pan (all that would come out) as i wanted to stick a flat pan on it to make life easier wrestling it out by myself.
#4 is gone. but to my suprise the piston is also destroyed. how the rod didnt windmill the cases is really beyond me. im thinking it spun the bearing, then must have hit the head so hard it shattered the piston, or it broke a valve off too.
his bike is totally stock except for a slip on and air filters
anyway i thought it might be interesting to you guys, ill have more pics later as i strip it completely

got a little further into it. the rod literally moves up and down 0.75+-0.1 of an inch. i like a little closer to 0.0025 personally... he said it locked up, and i cant manually turn the crank over, it will go forward and back, but not past a certain point. im thinking something causing interference with the crank and clutch gears, theres a lot of shrapnel.... i will split cases tmrw
IN cam. head and cap didnt like getting run dry
i would say she was being ridden hard and getting the carbon burned off... it flakes off if you touch it

cases might be ok, not really sure till they come apart. they got rubbed by the bad rod. 3 rods are fine. hopefully nothing got in the trans. i think the block would be ok for a big bore. weld up the bottom and get it bored and plated. the head is looking like it may be toast. even if the cam is cleaned up, and the surface of the head/cap touched up, it may be a location for oil pressure to be bled off? really wish the cams had replaceable bearings too....

im having a hard time believing that the pin bore is in such good shape. the pin pushed right out

needs a head, crank could be fixed or stroked, but i think hes looking at just getting a good used stock crank now. i have an extra rod he could use. a little epoxy on the bottom of the cases, and its allready half clearanced for a stroker crank at a later date... im pretty sure millennuim can fix the block and make it a 1287 for about the same price as just repair. going to send them pics and get a quote.

That could have been a nasty accident.
Crank maybe, but I would find a block.
Zx12 stuff pretty cheap now.

millennium said they can fix it. i sent them those pics. i have 3 spare 1287 pistons hes getting from me. going to put together a combo very very similar to the motor in dads bike.

this is head #2 he got for me to work on, not the best pics, some i got with my phone...
the IN cam thats pictured above cleaned up nicely. it was mostly aluminum stuck to it that polished off. very very minimal scratches, nothing to worry about. cams are off to get adjustable sprockets pressed on, and the head is away to get surfaced
heres the block repair
surfaced locally
a shot of the ex valves in the old head
the valve seals were quite worn, the valves actually felt rather loose compared to what Im used to(pulling up and down, guides felt normal). lots of build up on the valves (ex)
epoxy repair. I left it thick on the outside. quick blast of primer and high temp black paint. (I know Im no painter)

top rings were all about .009 out of the box, and the second rings were all about .017-.018
set the tops to .015, left the others alone

I've been meaning to ask you, what was the root cause of the last pre turbo engine failure you had, where you threw the rod through the case? What was your set up when that happened?

finally got the last of the parts and its going smoothly
set timing to 106 106, should be a fun street n strip motor. lots of PTV clearance. CR at 12.7:1
