Why is a multistage better than a single stage lockup?

Will a multistage lock-up improve the 330' with two stages of nitrous v/s a single stage lock-up?
If so how/why?

only if you know how to set it up

total pressure on the clutch pack is static spring pressure plus the added pressure from the lock up arms. with a single stage the arms "kick in" all at once. with a multi, you can delay some of the arms from adding pressure.

the problem with a lot of power and a single stage is the fact that in order to keep the clutch from slipping on the big end it will take a lot of pressure on the clutch pack. if your adding a lot of pressure with the lock up, it may just lock up too soon in the run and cause the bike to bog. this is where the multi comes in. you delay some of the arms from adding pressure so you get rid of the bog

also when and how you spray will impact what you may need

That is the problem I am having.
Thanks KZScott
If I add more static and leave the single stage arms alone(not bogging) would that allow the arms to come in later with more combined pressure(static and arms) later in the pass?

yes, but you may not be able to control hd springs as easily with your hand. thats something thats different for everybody. it may work out well for you, or cause you problems. I use lighter than stock spring from MTC and modified a single stage kind of halfway to a multi. 2 arms are free with very minimal weight and 2 arms have hold back springs with some weight that kick in later than the first set. took the other 2 arms off completely (6 spring 6 arm design)

what i found out is the more arms you have the quicker the lock up and only two arms on will have a longer "enguage" time cause it will take more force from the only two arms.
i my self had a problem with real stiff springs and hand launching. now i am at 4 mtc springs shimmed up to the point i can not throw it. i can manage it real nice and it being still real soft compaired to stock and stiff gives me some leeway when i let it out too fast.
what ever works for you.
i like my setup.
