Chain tension question
OK all you gurus. I've got a question for you regarding chain tension. I know what the manual specs out, but I know that the specs are based on a moving swingarm. What are your thoughts about running a tighter chain tension while (say about 1/2" of slack only) running a solid rear end?
The reason I'm asking is that I installed a 17/48 setup on my bike, and even with the tensioners loose, the chain is still tighter than the spec. I could throw the 16 on the front to give me more room, but I'm just curious to hear what y'all think about running with the chain tight on a solid rear end.

So if you stretch the chain up and down at the midpoint between the front and rear sprockets, it only moves a half inch? That sounds tight. I imagine all that'll happen is you'll wear the chain out faster, and rob a bit of power, but I've heard of a dragbike with and overtight chain breaking its output shaft on the launch. Can you get an extra link in there without much trouble?

Sorry, Red, but hitting the 16/48 without trying the 17/48 first scares the crap out of me. I don't have a feel for whether or not I'll be able to get my foot in to shift before bouncing off the rev limiter.
OK, now that I really think about it, the tightness of that chain is really sketching me out. It just doesn't feel safe anymore. I'm running the stock chain on the zx12. Should I just try to add a couple of links to the stock chain, or should I just get a new chain all together?

Its probably easier to get a "new" chain, but you will have to disassemble the swingarm to get the stock chain off without cutting it.
