What would you do?

I am thinking about running the 2000 zx12r at the March Texas Mile. It is 100% bone stock. What , if anything should I do to it before I run it? It would be very interesting to see how fast it will go just like it is. Does anyone have a metal chain guard or mirror block off thingies that I could borrow for this one event? Anyway I would love to know what you guys think I should do to the bike befor I run it. Thanks........

IMO do absolutely nothing other than required steering damper, safety wire, metal chainguard.
bring an extra rear spkt that'll get you to 200mph in case we get a tail wind (once so far in 7 years)

you could dump a shit load of $$ into pipe, PC3R, race fuel, tuning, and get what, 3-4 mph more?
Not worth it, I say run stock, including mirrors if they'll allow it

just my opinion...

Besides all the other really good suggestions you might also consider a fresh motor oil and filter change, air filter, spark plugs, throttle body sync,TPS adj.In other words a good tune up,Inspect all fluids, top off or change if nesc.Brake pads, rotors, hoses etc Do a safety inspection, all bolts, fasteners, etc.as noted earlier saftey wire where required.Chassis stiffen or lower as needed.Drive chain inspected or replaced and properly lubed and adjusted.Do all the things that insure a efficient running engine, and safe handling machine.Have fun and good luck.

Run it stock, should be good for low 180's with Texas Mile winds. I do believe I have mirrow block off plates and a chain guard I could lend you for the Mile. I'll have to check the chain guard though as it might be too long.

Now I am getting excited. Of course the bike will be gone over, it stays in excellent condition Including good tires, fresh brakes, new Motul 300V oil and filter, Thanks to all for your kind offers I will let you know what I end up doing but I am leaning heavily toward bone stock with no mirrors.

I vote for 100% stock no mirrors. And bring some rear sprockets!!!

Doug may be going this year so he can work with you on extracting the most out of her.

Or is it a him?

I agree, some sprockets all the rule abiding hardware and put some #'s down,I own a 12 and a 14 but the 2000 ZX12R has a mystique about it.

The first time I ran the Busa there was my first time to run it anywhere. It was stock but for a pc3,a JC tune and a little lowering.Thats how I ran in on the street, mirrors and all.Just wanted to see what it would do.Got a 179.something,then the bug bit.

My recommendation is to keep it near stock and ride the bike, get some passes under your belt. See what the bike likes....see where you feel it benefits you to shift. Get comfortable on the bike. You can always mod it but the less power you go out there with the more I feel you can learn and improve. Thats what its all about. If it was just about guaranteeing a 200 mph pass you could jump on an overpowered turbo busa and it would be a walk in the park...but really what woud you learn?

Pass tech, bring sprockets, learn how to swap em back and forth safely with someone experienced helping you out your first couple of times.

If you get anywhere near 200 mph on the stocker with the seat time you'll know you can go back, throw on the pipe, pc3, filter, tune it, do some other budget minded mods here and there....starts line up and it'll be 200+.

Best of luck.

I think my first run down the Mile on a 12 with pc and pipe was 177ish.

I wouldn't worry to much about sprockets (one tooth on either side), Just be sure to stick around Sunday and Hot Lap that old 12, lol. I may have some clutch springs laying around you can slip in for just running the mile, if you like. Plus you can check your clutch and make sure it looks and measures well. I'd hate for you to go to the Mile and have the motor go through the clutch on the big end.

Gary those clutch springs sound like a good idea, and Ali, I have a bit of seat time on the 12 I know it will do 170's no problem. I know the mile is different but I can't wait to try it on the 12 while my 11 is down. What does tare out the cat stuff mean?

when you unbolt the muffler and remove it the cattlist stuff will be in the end of the head pipe easy to reach.
ask the collective if it is a good idea. unless you have emitions for bikes where you live it does not need to be there.

I think I found my old schnitz clutch springs ( I run Brock's ZX-6 ones on my 12). I'll have to check them over at JC's and make sure they are the right poundage. If not you can just shim up the stock ones, just don't bottom them out. The down side Brenda is it will make the clutch harder for you to pull in.

the easy way, cut most of it off, then chip out the rest

fire it up before the can goes back on to make sure all the pieces get blown out

170? Sheeeeit you're a fairly small rider, get tucked in you'll do 180+. I rode one a year ago, truely bone stock down to the mirrors, signals, cat in the pipe....even a full tank of premium fuel. At a whopping full weight I still went 181 on it in less than a mile.

As long as you don't have a big headwind you'll break 180. POSITIVE! And on that run 5th gear was a bear and 6th gear was a snoozefest so throw on a 17 tooth up front or a 47 tooth in the back to give it some more acceleration. As it sits your bike is geared much higher than it will be able to pull (Unless you have a HUGE LORING 2009 TAILWIND!)

Good luck. If you don't have a damper get that first. I had to back out of this run due to a tankslapper at the end, hard to see in the video but its there. I was slowly clawing the Yamaha back. Not enough to have passed him at the end EVEN IF the damper WAS on there but a damper is a wise investment.

Brenda Sue is VERY aggressive on the throttle and has a tuck to die for right off the line.

Loring is definately a possiblity for me. Right now I'm throwing about 75% of my net income directly at credit cards so its tentative. 1-2 Maxton events and a Loring event would be great.

I'd love to do a Maxton event this year, i really like that quirky place, but i'm not at all sure of my schedule.

If you go to Loring you gotta go to Jim's monday lobster fest.

Also, i been hearing that Rickey Gadson M-A-Y show up again.
