Transmission Service

Does anyone have any recommendations for transmission service? I'm looking to have hard welding, up/down undercutting, heat treatment and maybe coating done to my S1000. I'd buy new OEM replacement parts, but they're expensive, unavailable and they would just exfoliate shrapnel like the original ones did.

hey Tim
I don't know if he does all the stuff you want but lots of us have used this guy to great satisfaction:
"Mark Doucette,
R&D Motorsports
727 447 4552 9-6, M-Th, EST:
1632 N Hercules Ave Bldg G, Clearwater, FL 33765
"

Call him only when you have a "few minutes" to spare

a nice touch: he dremel/scribes yr initials onto all parts he touches/modifies.

Thanks for the referrals. Just spoke with Mark at R&D. That man is a wealth of information! As soon as I convince my rider to do a trans service instead of getting a new bike (and a whole new set of variables), I'll be sending Mark my trans and cases. Thanks again for all the help!

The stock trans would nearly plug the drain hole with metal fragments at every oil change. My oil change interval, BTW, is one race weekend. Those gears must be big to be able to spare that much metal.

Holy crap TIm. Is this common on these bikes? Never heard this before.

I hear that R&D is great, and that you pay for it. I wanted a larger first gear, which Robinson makes, and ended up sending my trans to him, and I'm happy.

What do you think might be the issue for your case? Did mark or you have any ideas. Clutchless shifts on a road coarse? Or down shifting at high RPM? Gear metal hardness?

In over a decade of racing at this level, I have never seen this kind of debris on the drain plug of an otherwise running motor. In roadracing, all shifting is clutchless, all downshifts are from high RPM. Over the years, some bikes have had slipper clutches while others have not. I can think of many things that could be the source of the issue, but without having seen the transmission yet, they're all speculative.

I have so little experiece and have only seen a hand full of trannys go bad. The ones I have seen were from drag race bikes and usually had bent/worn/fatigued shift forks and shafts with the trans damage. It will be intersting to see what you and Mark have to say.

So when you get your trans done, do you go full-boat (undercut, micropolish, microblue, shimming), or do you do something less?

My 12R need a new 2nd gear, new shift forks...

I added:

Undercut
Nitrous Cut Shift Drum
Billet Shift Shafts
HD Circlips

(as best as I recall)

On the 14:

Several gears needed welded up
Undercut, with Pro Cut for Drag Racing (includes heat treat)
Nitrous cut shift drum
Heavy duty detent spring
Addional ZX-14 specific mod (I'd had to check the paperwork)

Of course, it all starts with a magnaflux and inspection. Our drag racing needs can be somewhat different than what you may need for road racing. For example, some undercutting can adversely affect downshifts.

in mine, billet 1-4 output gears, with first being lower ratio(drag), HD clips, nitrous drum mod, back cut, new forks and billet shift shafts. havent messed with it since, but my blow up has caused a need to get it looked at...
