the combustion chamber is like that from the factory??
looks like a wide step over, so I assume so...
large quench area between the valves eh?

Is it me, or are those some disproportionately large intake ports and valves? Have you calculated any Mach numbers yet?

Yes those are CNC chambers from the factory. Very nicely done. It looks like a big step over but they are actually quite smooth. A touch of something would remove the step over marks but i don't think there's any power in it.
Yea that quench area is good for NA power but will be an issue with spray or a Turbo. The Busas have a similar problem in that area. The material disappears (melts away) due to the elevated localised temps. Basically the heat cant get to the water jacket fast enough.
The ports MCSA is very large for a 1000. However this engine is biased to make more power up top and rev higher to boot. It has a shorter stroke and a bigger bore than the other liter bikes. The bore stroke ratio is closer to Moto GP specs. The valve size is dictated by two things. The bore and the required localized average velocity of the MCSA.
Its going to be hard to make this head better on a stock displacement engine.

Its the first that I've seen.
We do a partial CN\C chamber on the busas.

VERY informative!
Do you have any pics of a stock ZX-14 head so I don't have to pull mine to compare?

You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

Video of the BMW finger follower valvetrain in action
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsa6kq-qqIE
The angles the levers impart on the valves is a very aggressive acceleration of valve action, giving more time the valve is fully open.
KTM uses similar design on their SXF and XCF DOHC engines from what I understand
KTM also spanks all the competitors HP due their head and valvetrain.
Maybe Jim can elaborate.

Jim can you take pics after? how about with valvetrain installed?
how the hell do you adjust the valves? , no buckets, no shims, no rocker adjusters I can see....
looks like the followers tips are designed to be sacrificial wear items?

The ratio of the finger follower is exactly why the design is better performance wise. Its also has lighter reciprocating weight. When looking at the lift profiles, the area under the curve is greater with the rockers ratio added in.
There are shims under the fingers, just like on a zx11 etc.
The good part is that if you spit a shim it has a place to go and may not be so devastating to the rest of the engine. You may feel a big power loss on that cylinder but you may not crush everything.

If you look at the "Patent" Kawasaki has filed on the new build of the 2011 ZX-10R their design is very similiar to that of BMW's with the finger followers just a lil bit different. But the 2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R will have finger followers as well......FYI
