Oh Man, Dan, sorry to see that! If "the big end feels good on the crank", I wouldn't expect it to be oiling, BUT if you hadn't said that, I'd be pretty sure that you had an oil pressure issue. Prolly had a piston seizure.
I have a 1340 for sale...... unassembled, new crank & cyl just needs pistons.

BTW that's EXACTLY what my ZX-11 did at 197mph on the salt. It was... "interesting".
Karl- you didn't measure the actual bore size? Sheesh.

Doug,
that was 3 years ago when i first started building my own motors. Obviously I measure bore/piston now.

I think it's bullshit that Muzzy set that kit up a thou less than 87mm; i guess Rob had some biz reason for doing it.

The more i think about it, the more it pisses me off

And, technically it's not even a 1427, its a 1425.9.

OK, ranting has stopped, back to Dan's unfortunate situation.

That whole thing sounds a bit strange to me. I'm going to look back into it. The blocks are always plated to match the pistons, The pistons aren't made to fit the block.

Doug, some info for you:
(I started measuring after my motor seized a piston on the dyno on Oct 7, 2006)

PISTONS:
Feb 20, 2007: Muzzy Kit pistons
#1- 3.4219"
#2- 3.4219"
#3- 3.4217"
#4- 3.4218"

Jun 7, 2007: JE "87mm" pistons
(i.e. pistons sized to work in an 87mm bore),
Millennium measurement
#1- 3.4227"
#2- 3.4230"
#3- 3.4228"
#4- 3.4231"

BLOCKS:
when????: new Muzzy 87mm Billet block #1634 arrived
#1- 3.4233"
#2- 3.4233"
#3- 3.4233"
#4- 3.4234"
(could be faulty measurement, seems too tight even for a Muzzy kit block)
Apr 5, 2007: sent back to Muzzy, porous weld, leaking out L side near head

May 2, 2007: new Muzzy block #L912 arrived, replacement for #1634
#1- 3.4243"
#2- 3.4241"
#3- 3.4240"
#4- 3.4240"
May 8, 2007: ANOTHER Muzzy Billet block with a porous weld, this time leaking into cam tower

july 30. new Muzzy Billet block #A1331 arrived
#1- 3.4242"
#2- 3.4242"
#3- 3.4242"
#4- 3.4243"

Dan, sorry about the mini jack of yr thread.

No apologizes needed! It's all related and hopefully not only me but some other folks can learn too.

I got the piston to move down in the bore an inch or so with hopes of looking up into the combustion chamber, something I may not want to see. :-(
Coby worked his stuff on the head and it performed great, I hoped it's not killed. With the cam numbers Muzzy gave me for his cams and his Pro Pipe, the bike had a hit at 8k and pulled hard to the extended rev-limit.

I can't get fired up about getting to work on it. I know a lot of people say "it's racing, ya gotta expect it" and rightfully so but it's one of several hobbies that trip my trigger and I'll get on to it in the near future.

I just got an enclosed built to haul it and the boys bikes to the meets and we've got to get it ready plus putting some finishing touches on their bikes for Maxton.

Thanks again everyone for the comments,
Dan

Dan, sucks that it went out on you, but WAY better on the dyno than ANYWHERE else. Hopefully you get it sorted out and see you at Maxton...we can talk about Kawasaki's most beautiful Ninja....the beloved 500R.

Thant sucks Dan.

When your ready to dive in let me know and i'll have you take some close up pics of a few things. we can try and figure it out.

I agree with doug thou, if theres no blueing and the big end looks good then you may have had a piston/ring issue.

Jim,
I'll take some pictures when I tear it down, thanks for the offer.

Scott,
Yeah it was fully warmed up, he had made a couple full pulls to get a baseline........he takes his time.

Mike,
It was a winter project for me & the boys out in the garage so the time we spent gathering parts and building the engine was great, spending the $$$ and missing out what I had planned for this year is the bummer part.

When my slush fund builds back up I'll be hollering at you fine folks for the needed parts. I am gonna put a good set of rods in the next one, it may not have made a difference in this one but I can't help but wonder since they had 30,000 miles on them and I boosted the power by 30 hp if #4 could have just failed.

More to come so stay tuned........ :-)

Dan

Yeah psycho I've heard that too and they may very well hold up if they are in good shape. My son could have performed a NDT on mine at his job but I never seriously thought about it as they "looked" good to me.

Like you and a couple guys have stated with no blueing it may have not been an oiling problem, I'll get on it soon to find out.

Thanks,
Dan

The stock rods are amazingly tough. I have never seen one break on it's own.

Dan, I need to come here a little more Often! This is my first for seeing this! That bike was Family! I remember when you rode it to MIR a few years back! I wish I did not know how you felt, but when I blew mine up in 2005, I came home and cleaned up everything and took it apart and got Everything I needed to make it perfect and then Stopped! I did not even hurt the Case or Crank.

Just Set it aside do not even take it apart and wait until your Slate is clear before you start to work on it. In the mean time you KNOW What parts you need keep looking and when the deal comes take it and set it with the Bike so you can do it all at one time!

One last piece of Advice! Do not even Consider selling that bike! It is Family and no matter how family acts you cannot get rid of them! That bike and you have serious History together and when I get mine finished, I want its relatives to be there for it!

Now you know that it is not time or money (with some things) it is the Idea that it can fail No matter how Perfect we try to make it! Just like your childern when they do bad

Sorry to hear that Dan, if you run stock rods on It I think I might have 2 laying in a box. They came out of my bike with around 8k miles on them. I would have 4, but I gave the other 2 away. If I can find them, and they look good, just let me know if you would like them and they are yours. I also have a 1290 block that needs one cylinder welded on...............but it might be cheaper to just pick up a used block. I can not remember what millenium charges to weld, bore and replate...........but I think it's a little pricey.
