My LSR season is over before it began!

I just installed my cut forks with new seals and mounted new tires. Took it up to the dyno for him to write a map and play with the timing since I had it zeroed out after the build.
He made a couple full pulls for a baseline, the bike made a corrected 208+ on his Dyno Jet 250 with pump gas and all seemed fine.
About halfway thru the mapping using Tuning Link the engine grenaded at around 11,500 rpm in fourth gear, he was writing a full map since it's my streetbike.

#4 piston is stuck at the top of the cylinder and the rod snapped right below the wrist pin as you can see in the picture with my hand.
The rod's big end feels good on the crank. It's early and it'll be a while before I perform an autopsy but I'm thinking an oiling issue. I put a little over 500 miles on the motor since I got it going and have beat on it several times including a good street race up to 175 or so.

All that was left was some safety wiring and it was ready for Maxton in a couple weeks then Loring, Texas & Florida..........bummer.
My wife keeps reminding me that I could have been straddling it at Maxton when it came unglued, might have been really ugly. The explosion was pretty violent as there was schrapnel throughout the dyno room. The operator had to be taken to the hospital due to oil & water burns on his lower leg. He's okay but has one nasty looking ankle.

I've got the old 12 up on my lift where it will be for a while.......we're going camping to chill out!

Somebody chime in if they have a motor laying around that needs a good home.

Dan

I picked up a bike several yrs ago that had the same air conditioning look!
Same issue ie. appeared the rod snapped vs an oiling issue.
Sorry to see this.

Wow, that's a catastrophic failure. Your wife is right, you are lucky it happened on the dyno. I'm sorry about the dyno operator's ankle, I hope he recovers quickly and fully.

I'll keep an eye out for motors and parts. Do you know what is salvageable? Is the head OK? Crank fixable?

Dan;

Ouch!! $$$$!

Can you tell us why you think it was an "oiling" isue?

At this point, I do not see any "blueing" on the small end. Possible un-intended lean condition on the dyno causeing detonation and the piston siezed?

Thanks!

Dan,
I know EXACTLY how you feel, and I feel yr pain.

Same thing happened to me a few years ago.
In my situation, the conclusion was that the pistons were too tight in the cyl; it turned out that i had about .0009" clearance = YIKES!!!!!!!
Ran fine, but the dyno guy stressed it before the block was up to full operating temp and it siezed.

To This day I blame Muzzy for selling a billet kit which they advertise as "87mm" (3.4250") when it is not, rather it is 3.4240.
But I really blame ME.
Without measuring anything, I put in a set of custom higher CR JE pistons made for an 87mm block, rather than Muzzy kit pistons,.
Unknown to me the JE's were about .001 bigger than the Muzzy kit pistons.

lesson for me: measure everything before assembly, make no assumptions.

piston/cyl clearance may not be yr problem, but maybe worth a thought

X10!

After every build, I take my heap to Andy's dyno, do the normal tuning tweaks and then have him hold it WOT, full load at 11000rpm for 10-20sec. Drives Andy nuts, he thinks its gonna blow up & oil down his dyno, but hey, better on the dyno than at the 3/4 mile marker.

Man that sucks. Sounds like it was a stout build with 208rwhp, I'm sure it would have hauled some serious ass.

Best of luck with the rebuild, I know you'll have it back up and running strong again one day.

Dan are you looking for an engine to build or a complete built motor? Both of my 12s are for sale. I have a fresh never-fired Lee's Performance built stroker with Lees headwork and dual intake cams, and the other is as fresh Lee's 1290 with Lees ported head that was built, assembled and tuned by Dave Owen just before he past. I've been riding it on the street only, it has about 2000mi on it. If you're interested contact me offline, I rarely ever check this website. I don't think I've logged in since Dave died.

Wow,thats what you call a big bang motor.
If it was going to happen that was the best place for it,shame about the dyno operator and shame about the motor.

Thanks for the replies guys and the info on parts & engines.

The dyno shop is run by a good friend who has tuned Dragbike champion bikes and he is as good as they come. I agree with you psycho that it coulda run lean and maybe the equipment readout wasn't right, I do know that Chris keeps an eye on everything going on. I have 100% confidence in his abilities and I know what you're saying Karl but this guy warms bikes up forever before twisting it's ears.

When time allows me and the boys will drop the engine and pull her apart and maybe with pictures and several opinions with your guys help we'll figure something out. I'm an old dog but I'm still trying to learn things and if it's something I did wrong on the build I hope to learn from it.
The rods had 30,000 miles on them and I increased the horsepower by almost 30 ponies, maybe they just gave out..........I dunno.

Thanks again folks,
Dan

I just lost the rod in my 02 but it happened at just a tad over 2000 rpm`s..I was idleing over through the pits to make a pass down the 1/4 mile when I heard a funny sound. Went back and tore the clutch apart, nothing found, back together, same noise...#3 rod bearing was bad..Thank god it happened before I made the pass..Who no`s what kinda damage would have happened. Well we see from Dan`s.
Good luck, I`m right there with ya.
