Broke open the piggy bank!

Starting to spend money on my 99 ZRX again. The engine has been apart for a few months waiting on me. Kevin Cadby, at Stock, Mild to Wild, installed 1mm oversize SS valves in the head which I had already ported. The crank is going back to APE for an extra 4mm stroke along with balancing and lightening. The block is a SBM 81mm bore job with JEs. X-1 cams and springs have been ordered from Muzzy. These cams are a step above the ZX-11 cams I've been using. A set of Carillos are on the way and a six speed tranny too. Also have a new set of 40mm Mikunis to throw on. A friend is going to help me build a 1 5/8" diam. headpipe header for it. We're going to scab an old zx-11 system onto it somehow. Hopefully next month I'll have a 1278cc fire breathing Rex! Maybe I can even hang with Dean on his Rex if he doesn't neuter his. LOL

Woo Hoo! I'm psyched you're building it up. Sounds like it's gonna be killer. You getting a lockup? Airshifter? Nitrous???? I'm curious about how the X1s work out -also the pipe.

Man you've got me thinking again... I did just get a raise...

Ken, you HAVE to shell out for the FCR 41 flat sides. They make, a HUGE difference. Ask Bad ZX about it. When he was tuning his ZX11, he gained like 17hp going from fully dialled in, stock 40mm keihins to the flat sides. His motor was a little smaller then what you are building. His ZX will polish off busas! You will prolly go low 9s with your setup on motor, hell maybe more I don't know. I think Chris went 9.50@145 on his ZX so, you will have more power, lighter bike, should freakin roll. See ya in March.

Holy frijoles! 17hp?? Mike Keyte told me I could pick up a few hp going from RS40s to FCR41s, but that much? Hard to believe. It might make it worth it, even if they cost almost TWICE as much -$550 vs $950.

I can see some hp gained going from stock 40s to the FCRs but the Mikunis I'm going to use aren't like the stock Keihin 40s. No butterfly to restrict flow. The FCRs are nice but like Dean said, twice the price, even more when you buy filters. Maybe APE will take them back. Can't hurt to ask. Who makes a lockup for the ZRX, Dean? I'm still not planning on using an air shifter and definitely no NOS. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get the HD cylinder studs and nuts from APE just in case. I'll send ya the pics, Bergie, when the metal starts arriving.

Dean,
Actually it was 20hp.
I was on Mike's dyno. He had tuned it to peak. When it started loosing hp, he stopped. He was making jet changes on the stock carbs and airbox. K&N filter.
I told him that there was no way in hell that I was happy with 160 hp. He told me that the carbs were the restricting factor. I told him that if he SHOWED me, I would spend the extra money.
He took a set of Keihen 41 flatslides off the shelf and put them on. Cut the airbox for the stacks to stick through, It went 16 or 17 more hp right then.
He tuned another 3 in it.
It made 180.7 that day.
He went up 1 jet size to help it to not lean out on top end.
I have been 184 mph on a GPS, but it was a windy day and I was havinf to lean to keep it straight. I am pretty sure it'll go a few MPH faster on a better day.
It's been 9.56@144 at HRP with a 195lb rider.
4" SBM extended arm and a M/T street tire.
The pig is heavy too.
GOTTA get the head flowing!!!

I understand now. I misread Alan's post -I thought you gained 17hp going from Mikuni RS40 flatslides to FCR41s.

Ken you can use a lockup for a ZX11 if you cut the 'ribs' off the ZRX pressure plate and space the snowflake correctly. MRE makes them.

It's a 13:1, 1255 block and the head flows 148 cfm at .400 lift.
The thing was wanting to pump, but was restricted at the carbs.

Ken, who's porting the head?

Thanks for the info, Badzx. Actually I ported the head a couple of years ago. I picked up the flow 10% before the big valves. Not gonna bother checking it again. The FCRs would be nice, but just a filter setup for them costs right at $300, not to mention stacks and the price of the carbs.
