Ive been waiting for Dr Doug
yes the rings spin/move freely
just curious if I were to machine a little more than .008 off of the exhaust side squish area, if it would be a good idea to tighten up squish a little bit? Ive heard of success with .010 less than I had... but I kinda want to play it safe this time.
been running 2 seasons on Royal Purple XPR 5w20(formerly Racing 11). Im going to try Motul 300v 5w40 for the stroker motor unless i get convinced otherwise
VH, I did it by hand last time, so if i attempted it with a dremmel, it would be super slow(its adjustable). I understand what you are saying about only taking off the high spots! it would be very easy to over size the hole and make a paper weight
I used the following pins as they came with my 1287 pistons JE Pistons Part#: 827-2050-12-93C Description: JE STRAIGHT WALL PIN
thanks!!

I'm curious what kinda piston/bore clearance you have. Sounds like you should have plenty of squish but maybe excess rock is the culprit. I tore down a 1270 that had .006 clearance. I see the galling in the pistons all the time. Rods not as much. Tend to believe the pins are maybe too tight in the pistons. JEs always seem to be tighter than most.

I think you may be right, I just got off the phone with Jim, boxing up everything and sending it down for a professional inspection. getting him to hone the rods and pistons, skim the exh side that was hitting, check head and block for flatness ect. hopefully the block doesnt need to be replated. I got the block and pistons from APE with their exchange program.

more problems. I was sure that these pistons accept larger valves with no modifications. and I think thats correct IF the pistons arent rocking in the bore. I was so focused on the pin bores that I didnt even see this

also I noticed 2 shiny spots on the middle pistons on the peak of the dome, towards the very center of the head. it doesnt look like contact as there are no marks on the head in that area. just struck me as odd how there was no carbon build up
how this was running 155 in the 1/4 with a leaking HG, and pistons hitting the valves and head is beyond me. must be a lot more potential in there yet.
this motor building learning curve is getting expensive...
