NEW clutch post: grade yr fibers!!!

I am the self appointed "AntiChrist of clutch longevity" and thought I had tried everything, but today I found out something useful (for me at least).

Up till now my clutch routine has been to pitch blue steels and pitch fibers when they get down to .126" or so. A new clutch pak will last about 20 passes and will then have 4-6 black steels and some worn fibers.

I buy plenty of new plates but often I put together a pak of used but still serviceable steels and fibers. However, unlike the virgin paks, my makeup paks pretty much always have varying amounts of chatter.

Today, I was making up a pak of used plates and noticed that the fibers, although all .128-.129" thickness were varying colors. Some looked sort of new, some were very dark, both the fiber material and the steel plate backing.

Soo, I dug around my pile of used fibers and found 11 which were not discolored. Put em together with 10 good/used steels, and...

Guess what: NO CHATTER!!!!!!!

I'll bet the discolored ones were damaged by heat even tho they have very little wear.

Anyway, that my news for today; anyone have similar experiences?

Same experience here, I have about 50 of each spares still good for street use just not so good for drag racing. Also if you add another thin steel to a worn pack it will reduce chatter on an otherwise still streetable clutch.

I've been on the same clutch pack for ~150 passes, fibers are fine. In the long run, I bet you'd save money and go faster using a lockup.

lockup??? you are prolly correct!

I'd prolly save on clutches if I weighed less, also.
