First time out!!

Got an invite to race on a 1/4 mile track tomorrow, 11/30/02. My 12 is pretty much bone stock and set up for running the mountains here in So. Cal. so...... what tire pressure should I run and any suggestions on lowering the front, I don't have a lowering strap to speak of, but I do have tie downs. Hey and any other tips would be helpful.

Thanks
Muzz

I'd stick with your normal pressure in the rear unless spinning is a problem. With a stock wheelbase and a decent track, wheelies will more likely be your problem. You can drop it pretty low(20lbs or so) if need be. I think it's much too dangerous using a tie down strap on the front unless you have some way of zip tying it in place if it does come off. If it comes loose and gets tangled in the front wheel, well, you get the picture. Get ya some adjustable links for the rear and slide the forks up with a good strap when you get time. Always try and lower the front and rear the same amount or lower the rear more to try the keep the steering stable. I saw a friend nearly get pitched off his 12 with just his front lowered and strapped when it went into a violent headshake. Get the bike moving smartly with a quick initial clutch movement. Continuously feed clutch and throttle as rpms rise. You probably won't even be able to get WFO in first gear without wheelieing so be patient and try and get progressively quicker on both if you can get several passes in. Wheelies will kill your et if you have to back off the throttle. Shift near the redline in all gears. Enjoy!

Good advice as always Ken. One thing first timers always seem to worry about is their reaction time. Don't think about it at all - it's the last thing you'll need to worry about. Just wait for the ambers to start and leave when you're ready, and be smooth.
