running 1 front rotor vs 2
I would like to get some opinions on who has tried running just one front rotor. I have been told all I really need is one rotor to stop.
advantage would be a lot of reduced weight, both static and rotating
disadvantage is a much lighter front end. imo, the caliper is very effective ballast weight as far as location goes.
my oem drilled rotors are slightly warped so I got a set of EBC Prolights from Chavcat. these are actually heavier than stock, and the plan was to get them lightened/machined, but now Im contemplating running just one(and put the other on dads bike). cheaper/easier
main focus is drag racing, with lsr second. street manners and cornering come dead last

If you have enough wheelbase and chassis setup, you will be fine with one.

About 3 pounds from the rotor and another near 4 pounds from the caliper, converted single line weight savings over big dual rubber ones, etc. About 7 total. Stock arm had me wheelying a little more. For the strip on a stock arm I'd leave both on there but if you're stretched and lowered I'd just run one.

Im working on getting the weight moved around, yeah thats the ecu up on the airbox
took about 20 pounds off the bike tonight in the form of ballast weight on the forks and the brake stuff. i hated that ugly ballast on the forks....
i had a big battery in the stock location, probly 15 pounds, replaced with 2 stockers 11 each
net -13, havent weighed the 3/4 tank yet....
i have smelted lead before, i may do more. 2 pounds in the front axle so far...

i knew i kept the stock rear brake line for a reason

I have never thought about taking the front rotor off until I thought about how much easier it would be to clean the front rim. But I decided against it because the front is where your main stopping power comes from and the rear brake will never be able to compensate for the front. When you're going 100 or 150 mph, I want both my calibers and rotors on the front working together at the same time.

IMHO the biggest factor would be the shutdown area at the track that you race at. no point in saving all that weight if you cant do it safely.

Its funny, everyone freaks about it....., look at the brake area, for the weight of the bike.........
you can lock the brake with one rotor....., one is all that is needed......., two are for back road carving to keep the temps down.

Nox's last statement is correct, the dual rotors help with heat when road racing. I never had a problem stopping with one rotor at the strip. The only thing I noticed was the front brake grabbed a little quicker with one rotor. I assumed it was because the master cylinder plunger volumn was designed for two calipers. I could tell a difference in rolling resistence using one rotor.

I have run with a single for years and years, both at the strip and at the Texas Mile and I have had no issues....
it is not really that much weight, but I kind of wanted my RC rims to show... I have thought about putting the second back on for LSR, but never did end up doing it and I stop just fine from 200...

Look at it this way......., I have locked up the front end with one front brake........, why do you need two, unless its to keep weight up front........?

I already outlined much of this to Scott, but I will chime in for the benefit of others:
1) Stopping Power
As long as your track has a good shut down area, one rotor is fine. I have stopped from 170 mph in well under 1000 feet, and from 211 mph in under a mile. This is with relatively easy brake application in order to keep from getting the rotor too hot. Heat is your main concern with hard braking in a single rotor application. It is not a good setup for the street, imo...you will notice reduced braking performance, and riding with a passenger would not be wise.
2) Weight
You will shed about 6 lbs. going with a single rotor/caliper up front. This will have a noticeable impact on the bikes tendancy to wheelie. Obviously the shorter the bike is, the more of an issue it might be.
Anyway, that's my .02.
