Race Machine.Net...LOOK

Hey, Jim @ Competition CNC look at what these guys are doing over at RaceMachine.Net. They are replacing the skulls and this also might help with the ZX-14 cylinder head by having more material in the skull and combustion chamber area.So the port shape and dimensions are correct in that particular area. I heard you speak of this in the 86mm porting thread under the ZX-14 column when you stated that the additional material from the oversize seats gave you somewhat of enough material to transform the turn at that particular area of the port ??? I thought this may also help !!! Let me know....

It looks like the chambers over at racemachine shroud the intake valves quite a bit. I wonder if that's an acceptable tradeoff for more compression.

Yes I saw that they were doing the Busa head Its been popular off and on for years. Some factory heads were done like this also. One that comes to mind is the yamaha xs-650 twins of the 70's. And Porsche did skull inserts also for a while among other OEM's.

I dont know why you would need this on a busa or zx14 head. Maybe on a nitromethane application?

yeah, thats promod power, i doubt they could sustain it for much more than 1320 feet? something tells me a busa or 12/14 with bronze skulls may hold up a bit better?

Jim, how much nitrous would you be using for an extended amount of time to require something like this? i doubt many of us will be going with nitro

Ducati made Bronz heads that were covered with Aluminum to deal with the heat. This is the first I have seen then done in Modern times now that we have water cooled heads.

Wreckshop, thats what they are for
I would assume they are pressed in like valve seats and they are also bigger than the bore so are "held up" by the cylinder

I really have no idea.

If you could keep the valves from softening up and stretching like clay?

How long does a top fuel valvejob last? Not too long.

1 pass?

so really bronze skulls are not required on a water cooled head as long as you have bronze seats? its the valves that are the limiting factor?

My understanding of the value of a bronze skull is the elimination of dropping a seat as well as no cracking between seats. (potential due to high heat/load/pressure) This has been around in Pro Mod GS1100 based engines for some time.

Not sure if Prostock uses these; I doubt it as the Vortex 2 valve head from Rick Ward uses separate seats. Also when Spiderman was running a 2 valve Vortex head on his top fueler this also used separate seats. This woudl be of much greater benefit with 4 valve head.
