that surge you talk about. is that the pressure comming back out through the compressure when you loose bost that makes a sort of banging sound?

Yep, surge is flow reversal in the compressor, if the engine cannot use what it's being fed, it must go somewhere. On the compressor map, high pressure with low flow (upper left quadrant) will put you in surge. When the flow reverses, suddenly the pressure is released, and then the compressor wheel spins up again rapidly, reverses again, spins again, etc, and this creates the banging noise. I haven't experienced it myself, but I'm not interested in trying it, I paid too much for the turbo.

my dodge would do that all the time when pulling at the fair as the engine pulled down. and on the street most of the time also while i could lay the needle on the 50psi peg. now with 4 turns out of the rack travil it only done it with a heavy trailer. super stock guys say that noise on the smaller turbos usually is followed by snapping the shaft. he said i should be carefull. well then i got out of it anyway.

My truck will do that if I'm pulling hard up a hill and let off suddenly.Wondered about the bearings and seal whenever.
