some drag questions

just have a few questions about some of the videos i have been watching lately with "grudge" bikes in them. i noticed alot of the times before a run i would see the riders mess with the gear shift lever with their hand while blipping the throttle at the same time. what exactly does this do?? in about 90% of the vids ive seen i was lost to what this is ha. im no noob to drag racing, but i guess theres alot i gotta learn about some things.

also i was reading an old super streetbike mag and this guy had an 05gsxr1000 custom and he said he used it on the strip as well (stretched, sidewinder, etc.) yet the guy had NO rear brakes and only 1 FRONT rotor...is this guy nuts or what? is that common to have no rear brakes on a drag bike?

Six.....The burnouts are usually done in a higher gear (I do mine in 3rd) what they are doing is making sure the bike is in first gear before they run down the track.
The single front rotor is pretty common and I've seen a few bikes with no back brakes....That would not be legal for any kind of santioned racing (NHRA, AMA, SEMDRA etc...) It's probably not a big deal to run without a rear brake as I've never used mine.....but I'm only trapping at 150 max.

ah i see, so they are pretty much just downshifting in a fancy way so they dont have to use the clutch?? i guess i really havent paid much attention to how much i use my rear brake at the end of the run. guess id be worried about trying to do a 150mph stoppie!!

I`m pretty sure they may be useing a slider clutch so they blip the throttle to make sure it`s in A gear and then click down till they get to 1st. gear.....With a slider you can`t tell your even in a gear untill you blip the throttle......If your in 2nd gear and blip the throttle you can feel that it`s NOT in 1st. cause it`s not very responsive to the blip.....

Stuart, that sounds more like what i would guess it is. i did notice how the bike reacts when they do this. i just had no idea why. Now "slider clutch" is that where it kind of acts as a "stall" for a bike? where you dont have to have the clutch pulled in at all before you launch??

Yes , that is probably what you are seeing.....That style of clutch is sorta like a mini bike, where you just twist the throttle and it takes off.....I have one in my 02 ZX12...It`s called a Hayes Convertible Clutch.......It`s a pretty cool setup....www.haysmachineworks.com check it out.....

i have one of the MTC sliders. no more clutch lever on the bike, just twist to go, or pin it and then get off the twostep (much more fun and can be wired to a delay box ). but they are for track use only. or you will burn up the clutch. if you get around to it, buy the hayes convertable if you wanna ride the streets with it.

No riding around town with a slider. The new hayes convertible allows you to switch to a mode where you can ride around town. Sliders are very hard on the clutch if you try to ride around.

Those bikes probably have an auto tranny as well, and you cannot let out of the gas in a lower gear, bad things happen inside........

Slipper clutch is something completely different. It allows you to engine break without locking up the rear tire.

Uually bent shift forks and just generally rough on the gears....A couple of the gears are spring loaded along with a shift fork....It`s really hard with a full auto if you run into a problem with the pass, but a semi auto 1,2,3 and kill on 4.5.6 you can quick shift to at least 4th and then ok to get out of the throttle without problems....But man they are nice..Ya can`t even feel the shifts, sorta like an automotive tran.s in drive....Smooth shifting....

Man, it sounds like it would be a BLAST to ride, but I highly doubt I will get that far into it. Just hoping I can get the air shifter setup to my liking. Still want it to be streetable. If I had endless funds though...ill be sure to look into it!!

Well if you have just a lockup with a clutch lever, you can pull the clutch lever in and coast to the end of the track.....You just have to pull in the lever before you let off the throttle....
It is for the all out serious dragracer for sure....

Ya, as long as there`s no load on the trans, and the lever is in you can do whatever you want with the throttle....But with the lever out and going forward and in and out of the throttle, look out, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$`s......Hell I even would ride my 1,2,3 auto back from a pass...Just run it through the airshifter untill I was through the auto gears.....No prob.`s.....
Get one NOX,lol.....

do any of you run the shinko 003? or do you recommend something thats good for the strip as well as decent on the street? i dont really do any corner carving so im not worried about that. i have brand new qualifiers on it at the moment that came on the bike..just curious what has worked the best for everyone.

and does anyone know why the 200 shinko is WAY cheaper then the 190?

I use the Shinko Ultra soft 200/55x17 and some use the M/T shootout tire, and some just use a really good street tire....Unless you are really agressive on the launch, your tire`s will be fine.....I don`t know about the diff. in cost....You/me don`t really need the 200 size, I just ride mine on the street sometime`s.....

I have had very good luck with the Avon VP2 Xtreme both at the dragstrip and at the TX Mile, along with some street use, I actually was very suprised at how well they worked at the strip.

six, it really depends on your setup. how far you are stretched is prob the main thing. if your stock wheel base, you can get away with the regular 003 shinko (not the u/s) and you will get a lot more miles out of it. if you are stretched any, you need the ultra soft.
i have recently switched to the michelin power race, and i wouldnt put another shinko on my bike for dragracing, unless thats all i had.

you will get 25 different opinions on tires, mainly shinko's and michelins. how good does your track hook?

yeah the bike will be stretched, as far as the length of wheelbase i will have..is yet to be determined. more than likely just +6 or 7. i have used the shinko 005 advance and i can tell ya thats NOT a good track tire. our track hooks pretty decent i think. i have never ran the 003 or 003 u-soft. for the most part the track is pretty good.

if you can afford it, get a michelin power one!
as for extensions, a lot of guys go 6'. i am geared 16/48 and at 6" it was too hard to handle, so i went all the way back in the extensions from allthingschrome and the extra 2" made a worlds difference.
