turblow powerrrr
so let it begin.. turns out that one of the turbos in my stockpile seems to "be perfect" for my bike. i initially thought it was too big, but after a few calls and this and that, turns out the TB22 i posess should work fine and spool at a decent RPM. that had been my concern with a .63 turbine A/R.. it has a T25 flange, so whats nice is i'm also looking at getting a .45A/R T25.. should swap right out and give me a little grunt for the street.
i have to finish head work on the turbo motor, secure materials.. might have a lead on a cheap dyna 2000 from my parts guy.. gotta buy mroe gas and 4043 rod for the TIG rig.. get myself some old stainless headers and some plate stainles ( to strengthen the pipe.. its thin..).. gonna double coat and wrap this thing as well. keep heat up and hydrogen impingement down.
just need to get a couple extra hundred bucks together and start this thing! i think what i may do is build my prototype header, a real basic airbox (probably without IC) and run the thing on my street motor and see if it blows up.. from what Mr. Meyer and Jim and Dr. Cheese tell me, this thing should take the abuse.
so.. if the NA, stock street motor lives for a little bit on 10psi, i KNOW the built motor will love life!
the only thing stopping me is money.. lol

10 psi might be pushing it on a bone stock motor(on pump gas). what is the CR?

lol.. it IS a cute little turbo!!
i really van't wait.. i was thinknig maybe 10psi is a little much on a stock motor, but theres only like, 3 or 5 turbo 7Rs in the world to my knowledge.. so the info on how much abuse they can take is not really "out there".. so i will run it on "low" boost and see if it holds.. put it this way.. this case isn't the best.. if I holds.. i KNOW the turbo motor will hold.
bawls, i really appreciate it bro!! but.. no paypal.. lol.. go and buy yourself a pizza in my honor..
scott, stock CR is 11.5:1 .. 73 x 44.7 MM bore x stroke
Dr. Cheese.. have a major concern on the wastegate? it's a stock unit.. unmodified. .think i should port the gate?

it should be!! lol.. i stil lthink this housing wll be a tad big on the street and probably won't work too well for drag, but like i said.. it's sorta experimental. i'm going to try to find a T25 with a .45 A/R as well.. i'd REALLY like a .33, but that will be very hard to find. i think it'd spool at about 3000rpm yjo!
going to "estimate" that this .63 hotside will spoll around 7Krpm... at least i hope so. .any higher and it'll just sorta suck. (well, except for a wheelie-prone top end rush!)

my limited understanding is that the higher the rpm it takes to spool, the more power you can make as it doesnt heat the air up as bad. a small/quick spooling turbo would be working very hard at high rpm at high boost and making a lot of heat which would limit the power you could make.
any progress? ported the gate yet?

Boost is what causes the heat, not the compressor rpm. The greater the pressure rise, the greater the temperature rise (basic gas laws).
What you are tuning with the A/R's is the amount of exhaust gas flow required to make the boost you'd like.
Simply put, a small engine (not so much exh flow) coupled with a large turbine won't produce enough power to spin the compressor to make the requested boost. Also a compressor of the wrong size won't make the boost at the rpm range you need. Turbo matching is very tricky when you start from scratch. This will be pretty interesting.
WH, this is going to be a challenging project. Don't get discouraged if it isn't right first shot. Keep at it.

yes yes and yes..
scott, the magic of the turbo lies primarily in the A/R. this is a mathmatical answer to a formula relating the scnterline of the scroll (round part where the wheel spins) and the centerline of the port.
quite simply, the bigger the A/R, the more it ill flow and the more top end power it will produce.
the lower the A/R, you're moving the exhaust gasses into the wheel's center more and pinning it with less, but you choke top end becuse the port it willexit thru is now slaller.. there is an old skool trick known as "clipping the wheel" but thats actually kinda bad for them... but it allows you to run a tiny A/R and make more top end..simply because you're flowing more.
the heat is the biggest thing to making a turbo work.. a great example of this is if you're in a turbo vehicle or beside a big rig when a load is presented to it (like a hill)
you can hear the engine doesn't turn any faster and chances are theres no more throttle input, but youwill hear the turbo spool and the vehicle starts to pull harder.. the heat created from the extra load is hitting the turbine wheel. the gas is expanding exponentially and at extreme speeds. that expansion is forcing the wheel to go faster.. even tho the "air is thinner" because it's hot, its velocity is increasing. thats the main component in getting a turbo to work with your displacement. the rest deals with your CFM requirements and where the peak efficiency of the compressor lies. that is a function of looking at a "flow map".
you'll see little circles to the right of a line. the line is the surge line. operating at r to the left of it is bad ju-ju. those little circles keep getting smaller and sammler and the smaller they get, the higher efficiency you'll experience. the goal is to size the compressor to match your pressure ratio [(boost+14.7)-14.7] and your flow rate requirement. where these two intersect is what island you'll land on. the goal is the "peak efficiency island". .the smallest one.
Doug, as long as i have support form guys like you, i am confident in this working out. i have a buddy working on a megasquirt EFI build as well. this will be very interesting and i'm excited to finally start this. going to learn alot.
Dean, i've always wanted a turbo bike, and for as long as i can remember, i've loved boost.. i have already thought al lthis out and fell i'll be hooked and building some ridiculous monster zx14 in a few years. lol
