Mojave Mile - maybe some issues...

Mojave Mile website is up -- Reserve your grid spot!
New post by Mike Borders » Mon Nov 30, 2009 12:54 pm
We are now taking reservations this week for grid slots. Entry forms aren't quite ready yet but will be soon. The Rule Book is available for on-line reading and download. Contact info is on the website, and I'll repeat the office phone number here: 702-614-6108.
When the entry forms are ready, we will start at the top of our reservation list and take entry deposits, which will get you an entry packet. Group Leaders wanting to enter their teams should have all team member's names and key info handy when calling in. (Name, address, phone, email, and car/bike description.)
Please help spread the word by notifying all of your forums and friends.
See you in March!
Mike B

Reserve grid spot? Do you have to pay for that too? LOL!
I read through some of the rules yesterday, kind of interesting. Here are a couple that caught my attention:
1. Required: US State and or other country drivers liscences with motorcycle endorsement/license suitable for size of bike
2. ".08 Miles of stopping area after speed trap"
3. "20 foot prestart box.............no pre-run or warm-up burnouts allowed and starting burnouts must be kept to a minimum"
4. Motorcycle Unlimited class anything over 190 will require (w) (in parentheses) rated tires.
Load/speed index number in parentheses, example (73W)
5. Three strikes breakout rule anything over 5mph of applicable speed limit, 10% or higher immediate event disqualification
6. Graduation to unlimited license must be applied for. LSR experience + one or more observed runs at 170mph.....................
7. Minimum 48inch wheelbase Max 72inches (That excludes Guy Caputo)
8. Both wheels must have fenders
9. Streamliners prohibited
10. Tires must be 250mm section width or less (fixed )

whats the deal with no burnouts? thats going to make it tough on the extended guys unless you have a tire warmer. rear fender = hugger??? And there is a max speed if you have no LSR experience?

LOL, MM glad to see your new tag, I thought it might put a grin on a few folks faces.
RacerS, it seems to be left to the directors discretion, but it does not seem too many people will shoot out of the box the first time over 200. Maybe Noonan, LOL.
I myself hope to do a 170 pass then maybe 200+ from there on out, if everything looks and feels good. It'll be a short one day event this time, maybe 4 pass, depending on the number of entrants.
I would think the rear hugger would probably work, but you may wish to contact the powers that be.
I know a significant number of drag racers that do not run a front fender, because they are so low it hits the front plastic...........so that just crossed my mind for those who drag race and would like to show up to run a little LSR.

I did burnouts at Texas for a buncha events with my stretched NA 12, but found that they made no difference in mph, no real difference in traction off the line, AND they ate up SC-1's REAL fast.
Not doing burnouts is a safety issue, you have people standing in front of you.
Doing a rookie pass at 170 is generous, like gary, i would do it whether required or not.
Do a sweet, controlled 170, then on the next pass, go for it !!!

issues...
1) tires:
front: i use a Bridgestone Battlax BT002 ST, 120/70ZR17M/C (58W)___________PASS
rear: Pirelli Dragon Super Corsa Pro SC2 190/55ZR17 73W_________________FAIL
As Gary pointed out to run over 190 the tire needs to be rated "(73W)", not "73W"
2) leathers:
i have Vanson 2 piece leathers, 360 zip__________________________________FAIL
Mojave Mile rules say to run over 190 you need 1 piece leathers with CE-armor
I posted my concern on the MojaveMile site, let's see what they say.
BTW: "CE armor is a type of padding required by European specifications. It is usually found in the knees, elbows, shoulders and sometimes the spine area of motorcycle jackets. It is designed to crush on impact and to provide padding in the same way that a helmet protects the head"

Ouch, I missed that about the 1 piece leathers. If that does not change I might be out Karl. I can not afford to buy 1 piece fat boy leathers with CE armor, LOL. I also thought anything that just had a "w" on it with some numbers in front would be ok. Hmmmmm............ I'll have to look at my tires front and back now. If you hear anything please post up Karl, thanks for pointing that out.

Speed ratings, e.g., (W), are only applied to DOT tires, as I understand it. Does this mean that a race-only, non-highway tire, such as a Dunlop KR108 slick, would not be legal? That seems a bit daft.
As for the riding suit requirements, here's what AMA Pro Racing has published in their 2009 Road Racing Rule Book: "1.27.d. Riding suit must be one-piece construction and made of leather or
Kevlar." Why this requirement would be less stringent than that of an amateur, non-competition event also seems a little daft.

All bike-related tech questions that aren't addressed in the rulebook should be emailed to Blaine Spinlove (easy there, Karl) at biketech(at)mojavemile.com. Blaine is the motorcycle tech inspector for the event.
Note that the rulebook says that racing tires are recommended, but must be approved in advance. Pirelli Dragon Supercorsa Pros are DOT racing tires, and should probably be submitted, along with their date code, for approval. Current Dragon Supercorsa Pros are rated (75W).

Blaine Spinlove, eh??
My 1 mo old Dragon Supercorsa Pro was purchased 1 mo ago and doesn't have the parens around the W?????
Tim
do you know Blaine? Could you ask her the rationale behind the 1 piece suit requirement?
To my knowledge, no other asphalt, salt or dirt LSR event has that requirement.
(I may be wrong)

Forget for a minute about tire speed ratings and imagine if Blaine & Ted married.

Apparently it would not pass MM tech for Unlimited, but has passed at Texas, Maxton, Loring. hmmmmmm....

I'm not one of the rule makers, so this is just my opinion, but you couldn't force me at gun point to run a 168MPH rated tire at 200 MPH. I've survived a tire failure at over 160 MPH and would not repeat that experience for any amount of money. My view is that we all should be going after the maximum safty equipment, not the minimum.

I do not know Blaine, and that name could go either way on the gender. The young lady on the MM info line did have a slight enunciation problem, so Blaine's surname may, in fact, be Spendlove... which is much less intriguing, especially if Blaine is a dude.
Can you find the four-digit date code on your tire? If so, the first two digits are the week and the last two digits are the year of manufacture. So, if your code is 1309, that would be the 13th week of 2009.

I just got off the phone with Dennis Smith, the West Coast Dunlop race tire distributor. He confirmed that real race tires are not certified to meet DOT load/speed standards, and thus do not have load/speed ratings molded into them. However, the KR106 and KR108 slicks are designed to go 200 mph heavily g-loaded on the banking at Daytona for 30 laps, or for as long as there's rubber on the tread surface. Any questions from the MM tech inspectors about Dunlop racing tires should be directed to Dennis at 800-776-8473.
Perhaps it's time for Karl to upgrade to Dunlop slicks! I recommend the 6704 compound in the front and the 7704 compound on the rear.
Does anyone have access to the AMA Pro drag racing rulebook to see what kind of leathers they require? It seems to me that the MM rulebook authors might be slightly ignorant of realistic motorcycle safety requirements. CE armor is required, but a 10-year-old helmet is OK? WTF?
Update - The 2009 AMA Drag Racing rulebook contains the following verbiage:
2.10.3.2 *PROTECTIVE CLOTHING
Leather jackets, full-face helmets, eye protection, leather gloves and leather boots are mandatory in all classes (no driving shoes or sneakers). Any motorcycle participants running an elapsed time in the quarter mile of 9.99 seconds or quicker, 120 mph or faster or using nitrous oxide, nitro methane, supercharger or a turbo charger and all exhibition motorcycle riders are required to have full leathers. The use of synthetic material riding suits is prohibited. The use of stretchable Kevlar and perforated materials in non-critical areas are permissible. Fashion leather, including suede, is not permitted. Suits must be one-piece design or joined together with a "full circumference" zipper at the waist. Leathers cannot be too big or loose. Critical area (knees, elbows, forearms, shoulders) armor or 2-layers of leather is required. AMA Dragbike requires that all new construction by leather manufacturers include critical area armor. A spine protector is highly recommended especially in all Pro classes and non-wheelie bar bikes. Temporary motorcycle stands cannot be placed inside the suit.
Riders of motorcycles burning pure methanol are recommended to wear Nomex underclothing due to invisible flames. TF contestants are required to wear Nomex helmet sock.
Gloves must be road race type with additional Kevlar or similar palm patch or buttons, minimum 3" gauntlet cuff with wrist closure. Metal wrist band watches are prohibited. Leathers, gloves or boots with excessive wear or holes are prohibited.

Yep, it's hard to get fresh skips. I know it probably does not matter if your within a few years, but I'm a freshness snob! LOL. I am usually happy if it's not older than a year and a half since they will probably be on the bike for at least a year for the rear and two-three for the front.
Any response on the 2 piece 360 zip for unlimited class?
How are things going for you Ryan? Things working out ok?
