spark plug gaps
At what point do you have to start closing the gaps on the plugs from stock setting?I've heard the turbo guys have to,but wasn't sure about big bore or spraying.

I beleive it`s just the turbo`s and Nitrous bikes because they try to blow out the flame.....
Maybe you can side gap the plugs....But Don`t know about multi. ground straps though....

It's not because the spark "blows out". It's because the higher density of the pressurized air and/or nitrous serves as an insulator blocking the energy of the spark. This is why blown stuff needs a very high energy ignition. If you have to close the gap you need more energy.

It's tough to close the gap on surface-discharge plugs, too... Note that fine-wire plugs have a lower ionization potential than standard electrode plugs, which can provide a more reliable spark for the same coil energy levels. Not that they could replace a high-energy ignition, but every little bit helps.

its only hard if you are worried about accuracy. something tells me a BFH could close the gap to less than an RCH
i havent tried many plugs as i dont have a radical setup, but something i did notice was the factory cr9ekpa plugs have a ground strap that is contoured to match the electrode(i may have these terms mixed up) but on the cr10ek plugs i now run they are just flat. im guessing that the curved strap would be less susceptible to wear as theres a much larger area at the same gap, where the flat one is only gapped on one point, and as soon as it starts to wear the gap would increase. i dont exactly go touring the country on my bike so wear isnt an issue, but i thought it was interesting. a new set of plugs the way they come out of the box once a yr seems to be doing ok for me

But at a given hp,whether by turbo, nitrous or naturally aspirated, shouldn't it be the same amount of air/afr?

I converted my turbo ZRX over to stick coils but still had to reduce the gap to .024" for it to run good.
I know I need a high energy ignition but dividing the $$$ up between toys leaves very little to go around!

it takes a given amount of voltage to jumo a free air gap. there is a chart someware we had in the navy for the turbin igniters. as pressure increases the amount of voltage needed to jump the same gap increases. i can imagin flooding a cylinder full of 100hp of gas and -120 degf nos could cause cylinder pressure to get close to snuffing the spark. just be safe. if you could increase the input voltage it could help some. i do not know how the ecu will be effected but a msd box has up to 400vdc on the primary side of the coil. maybe some of the good guys could rig something like this for the stick coils.
at votech we has a plug checker that we could crank up the pressure to see when the spark went out. someone needs to make a box and a stick coil and play.
