OK guys yesterday I went to balance my crank and suprise! The guy was not able to balance it !!!! I explained to him that I took some weight out , and I told him it's got a balancer, he said oups the crank is not balanced since you removed your balancer!! We checked the crank to know where the problem was. Go check this page : http://zxzone.com/cranks.html (this is a zx 12 crank) I did exactly the same cut , but I removed less weight. If you don't want to take off some weight you have to take approx. 100g on the down mass of the picture to pre-balance. You can even make a machine to prebalance; it very easy. You need 4 bearings (empty and clean the grease off for less friction) and a stand high enough to clear the table. You then put the crank on it and let the gravity do the work.
After you can have it balanced on the machine.
If you take the balancer out without balancing the crank, you will have torsion on the crank and in the long run the crank could crack.
100g doesn't seem much and that's why the guys don't feel any vibrations.

This is really getting confusing.... I was told that my 12 crank was balanced to 100,000 rpms ?

Again, the "balancer" in the zx12r engine IS NOT a "balancer". It does not balance anything.
It has absolutely nothing to do with the primairy balance of the crankshaft.
When you spin up the crankshaft of a zx12r engine on the machine to check the primairy balance you dont add bob weights, its neutral, and the machine tells you the grams of out of balance it is.
And again, the "balancer" on the zx12r is not for absorbing torsional harmonics of the crankshaft like one on a car or truck is.
This isnt a car engine.
The only reason that "balancer" is even in there is for your comfort.

Thanks Y2k, I needed that, not that I doubted your earlier posts

It will be out of phase with the fireing of the cylinders. It wont be able to cancel out the vibrations and can actually amplify them.

Was it difficult to remove enough material on the journal side to balance it?
What was the total weight you removed?

yes it was difficult it's very hard métal and the crank a the beginning was 25lbs and after the balanced it , i got a flat 22lbs
if you want to do it on the tour you need a special stone very hard and you can only take off .010'' each time
you can take off about 3/4 lbs on the magnet
i got pic if you want
and we gonna be in NY friday night

Damn, we'll most likely be in midtown having a beer by 430. I'll be with a group of 6 so i cant hold them up. Usually a few hours is all i can take of the bike show.
But they do have good coctails there. I may buy a new helmet there if they have good show prices. As long as they can beat $330 for an RF1000.
I need more zooks too. Oh, and an 07 calander full of chicks too.

Thats an 02-05 Flywheel/Crank correct? Washer looks a little different also than on 00-01or did you have that made? Did you take the metal off the outside?
As a side note Marine Crank charges $65 to spin up and balance a crank.
