stick coils...
I pulled the coils/plugs Sat night and noticed 3 things:
1. # 1 coil had a tannish dust on the coil body below the rubber seal; never seen that before?????
2. #2 coil "popped up" while on the dyno; I was sure i fully seated it when i last did a leakdown. Andy says the clip in the coil is getting tired, not grabbling the plug. Anyone else have coils that pop up?
3. The rubber gaskets on the coils that prevent water & such from getting down on the plugs are starting to get torn up from so many R&R's. Anyone know where to get those things??

woppi,
if you grease the rubber gasket things they will go on n' off easily, but maybe the grease deteriorates the rubber. I will use silicone next time.

I use electrolic grease on mine. Nonconductive and keeps the water out.

Karl,
There's a guy over on the ZRX board (ZRXOA.com) that makes stick coil kits to replace the stock coils on the ZRX's. I bought a kit for the turbo bike and he's great to deal with.
His board name is Rexter and he's in the classified section.
He usually has spare parts, etc.

in the parts diagrams on kawasaki.com. after you find what the part number is for the bike you have, you change the search feature from model to part number at the top, and copy the number in there. hit search and it brings up every bike that takes the same part

Thanks Scott for the info.
Karl,
The ZRX has the old style twin coils, the kit converts it to a late model (ZX14) stick system.
Different bikes have different ohm ratings so choose wisely!

Correct. Some of the stick coils are 1.5 ohm and others are less than a ohm.

I use Fuchs Chemplex 710 (or whatever its new model designation is) from McMaster-Carr (#1418K31 Electrical Insulating Synthetic Grease Standard, 5.3-Ounce Tube, 385 Dielectric Strength).
"Excellent for lubricating battery terminals and other electrical devices. These translucent white greases are corrosion resistant and contain a silica thickener that won't react with rubber. Suitable for use on O-rings, gaskets, and seals in vacuum systems."

Karl,
These coils get very hot and deteriorate over time. Wouldn't hurt to replace 'em. That dusting could be evidence of arcing in there. Could this coincide with your loss of high rpm performance????
I think that the coil probably popped up because the drain hole in the plug well may be plugged keeping the plug well from venting.

^^^^ i was gonna say this same thing.. as well, the tan might be surface rust fro mthe steel plug body.. typically, when the coils start to break the insulation down, it'll swiss cheese the rubber and carbonize it from the heat..
carbon is conductive..
now you've REALLY got a good path to ground. like doug said, high rpm performance is almost ALWAYS affected with coil failure. i've seen it almost every time. part of what sets the saturation point (time) of the coil up is it's ability to resist jumping to ground too early.. if it's got an easier path ( other than the sparkplug) your secondary voltage output is now cut back by whatever percentage it takes to arc around the insulation to ground.
i KNOW for an R6 they're about 30-40 a piece.. it's a worthwhile investment.. keep them as psares maybe.. but don't trust them too much longer
wd-40, to my knowledge, is dieelctric. i suggest any silicon-based grease tho.. the silicon keeps the rubber pliable and in good insulating condition.
as far as the coil popping off, i like what doug said, but was sorta unaware of any vents liek that.. so, me.. i'd almost learn towards general metal fatigue (of the socket in te coil end) and axial vibration.
