The machinist stated that the 14 piston did appear forged, and the 12R definitely cast. He also said that it was much harder to cut through the 12R piston; he theorized that it might be more brittle. None of this is gospel, just his opinion.
Anyway, perhaps with these additonal photos we can determine a little more about the 14 piston and it's suitability for nitrous usage, as compared to the 12R part.
I'm all ears.

A seemingly decent article on piston basics:

It appears the top ring is thinner and the second ring is shallower. The second land is shallower as well.
If I was to stay on a big hit of nitrous for 10-15 seconds I think I'd increase the squirter volume and make sure its aimed correctly.
Most of the heat in the piston is removed by the contact with the cylinder wall. But increasing the heat removed by oil (squirters) is a good idea.

Here is a better close up comparison of the ring lands.

I wish I could say that I did this strictly as an unselfish gesture to stimulate discussion.
I'm actually trying to determine how much spray I feel comfortable starting with next season. The 12R pistons are a pretty well known quantity, so I figured I would make a comparison to them. RIght now I am feeling as though the 14 pistons might not be quite as sturdy for abuse...but that is just my gut feeling.

Depth is clearly diferent.....
