Another tragic day at Maxton.

Guy Lombardi was killed today in the shutdown area at Maxton. I didn't know the man but from what I read he seemed like a great guy with a zest for life & LSR.
He ran his Busa at Bonneville but was new to Maxton.

Godspeed, may you rest in peace.

What is the deal with this Maxton place, I have no desire to ever ride my bike there. I dont think the shut down area is very safe. Is it true there is a dog leg? How many great riders are going to meet with disaster before this is addressed? I realize this is a dangerous sport, but come on, we are talking about 2 experienced riders here.
Rest in peace............

It would prob be good to withhold judgment until facts are in.

Maxton has had 20,000??? passes run on it safely.

I don't particularly like that lil dogleg, but it is not a hazard once you know it is there, and rookie passes are required at Maxton.
(At least one 150mph rookie pass should be required at Texas due to short shutdown)

There are not a lot of details yet, Scott. In the case of the prior fatality at Maxton (Dave Owen), I think it is pretty clearly understood that the track itself was not the cause.

ok maybe I got a little ahead of myself. As Karl put it there have been many passes made safely at this track. I still dont want to run there. Just me, my choice!

RIP to a fellow land speed racer. At this time its probably too early for anyone to really have all the answers as to how or why it happened, but it did so lets give our warmest regards to his family.

On a side note Brenda, having raced at all the LSR venues here in the states except for El Mirage and one thing I can assure you of is that Maxton is the only one that conststs of mild "bends" or "turns" in it, it isn't pefectly straight like you saw at Loring and TX. That being said there are many people that are fine going fast in a truely straight line. But at Maxton you have just a couple seconds at 200 mph going through the traps before you choosing to NOT turn the bike can end up into an unpleasant mess. Lose your focus at any other track after the shutdown...say Loring or Bonneville....it may not really be a big deal with less variables to deal with. Also, Maxton is bumpy although many (myself included) are fine with it and find that the faster you go, the smoother it is. All in all, its really the only LSR venue I've been to where you have to turn your bike shortly after the traps or you are off the track, no way around it.

Many people are simply not used to steering a heavy motorcycle at 200 mph speeds within a couple of seconds, and thats perfectly understandable.

Didn't want to get off the subject too much but felt that this was an important point that should be addressed before blame is pointed directly at a stationary, inanimate object like the racetrack. RIP Guy, we never did meet but were both called to the Salt by the same movie.

It was a sad day at the track. We were rained out all morning, then we get the track dry for 2 hours and this happens. It soiled the mood all around for the day. My prayers are with the family of Mr. Lombardo.
Now as for the people bashing Maxton or the ECTA: This was not the fault of the track, the event planners or the staff. This accident was Operator Error. Because you went 202 at bonneville or Loring or Texas does not mean you are qualified at Maxton. It has Right hand curves, one in the beginning and 2 for turn off. I was actually sitting at the finish line watching him go by. It looked like he tried to make the short shut off and was going too fast and went straight out. He tumbled end over end once leaving the concrete.

what can be learned from this is that all racing venues need to do one rule change: Do not honor other leagues licenses. Make racers all qualify at each track individually. They are not the same in smoothness, straightenss, length of track or length of shutdown. Had he a little more experience, he couldve just tried the longer turn off and not stressed trying to make a turn off too early, after going 191mph on his first run.
Again I express my apologies to his fam and friends, but I hate all the internet banter by a bunch of people who werent there, or have never been. The ECTA and EMS did everything possible given the situation.

DOCSNINJA,
I am certainly not bashing Maxton, I happen to like Maxton.

When I first ran Maxton, I showed the admin a buncha slips from Texas in an effort to skip the rookie passes.
They let me skip the 125pass, but RIGHTFULLY insisted I do the 150 &175, before getting my A License.

I assume Mr Lombardo was required to do something similar.

I agree 100% with DocsNinja.

Having run at Maxton since '01 with the boys I can say that the bend past the finish line has to be respected, it can sneak up on you.
When Chad rode DaveO's bike at 221+ he said that he could tell a big difference during the shutdown area but even at that speed he negotiated the turn just fine but like many he has quite a few passes under his belt.

Dean,
Would you mind posting a picture of you guys with Guy so a face can be put here with a name?

I'm sure this must be very, very difficult for his family. Please remember them in your thoughts & prayers.

Man, that is really bad news...........My heart goes out to the family.

Yes, Maxton has it's issues, that can't be denied...............I love Maxton and the people there though..............this is a very unfortunate aspect of racing.

Gaetano Lombardi was one of my best friends, no one could ask for a better friend, he would do anything for anybody, and was very trusting and generous and a true man of his word.. Guy was also a very intellegent individual and a man of God, and was not ashamed of it. He was one in a million and he will be sorely missed by anyone who knew him. R.I.P. IN HEAVEN GAETANO
