quote: Pete, i put a lil better than a thousand passes at 1/4 mile routinely running high 8's, and never had a prob with my stock trans. I don't weigh all that much less than you (230)
I finally smashed the 2-6 gearset testing on the street, getting ready for a land speed race and button shifting at too low rpm under WOT.
X2
I'm 210 lbs before gear and ran many years with a stock trans, many many passes with spray. Not saying billet is not better , but it's not needed.

Mark advised me it is not unusual to find 2nd gear to be cracked (when magnafluxed) yet still functioning without any apparent problem.

I just sent some money to Robinson for the 3rd gear because that was the one that blew and he said it was the usual culprit.I also went with first just because of the different gearing. The casing has been welded and a good thing at that. The support on the case for thr shift rod was hanging by a thread when they removed it.That is welded now also.

Magnafluxing? Yep, wet and dry.
We can also check aluminum for cracks.
Pete, if you have someone magnaflux the gears for you (or any other parts) make damn sure they demag them before giving them back. Magnetized gears (or any other parts) are BAD!!

Because any metal will attract to them?

Jim,
how do you check aluminum for cracks (other than visually)?

I'm not sure how Jim does it but here at work we use a process called zyglo.
Basically you take your part and dunk it in a tank of fluorescent penetrant then take it out and look at it a dark room with a black light. Any cracks or flaws jump out at you in a fluorescent yellow color.
It's pretty cool. You can find stuff that you really can't even see or would have a real hard time finding with a naked eye.
I found a crack in one of my cylinder heads that way.

We have a secret lab in the back room and we developed special magnets that work on aluminum/glass/wood/and humans. We reverse the polarity and it keeps the workers away from the fridge. It also works well at the bar for picking up chicks as long as you have the polarity correct.
"Zyglo" whats that?

bahahahahahahahahahahahahaa
wise ass
we see the use of dye penetrant commonly in oilfield equipment; i was hoping for more knowledge on the wood & aluminum magnets.
