Almost 65

I'm sitting at the maximum wheelbase for my setup now, just under 65". I wanted to change the gearing a hair, and I went from 17/46 to 16/43. I used up every bit of my arm in doing so:

It only leaves me with about 1/8" of adjustment, though. It will probably suffice, but I may have the ends of the axle adjusters milled 1/8" to allow for a little extra adjustment.

I also replaced my threaded links with some fixed links. I wanted to level the arm out, and they moved the bike down a little under 1/2" out back. I can't get it any lower up front, so I am somewhat stuck at this point.

The bike is pretty much as low as I can take it now. With me on it, strapped down, the ground clearance is about 1.75". I have 3.5" of clearance above the rear tire. I wish the Brock's pipe had a little more ground clearance, and I will probably have to get a lowered pan as well. I want to go lower up front, but I'm already on the edge right now.

I'm not 100% sold on the way the bike sits right now, and I don't want to be worrying about busting the oil pan every time I launch it...so I might consider putting the old links back on until I take care of the exhaust on oil pan clearance issues. I think that to really make the most of this the bike needs to be dropped more up front...like nearly 1" more, and I don't have the clearance now for that. I'm going to take a day or two to think about it.

I didn't lengthen the chain any to do it, but it was an overall change of 4 gear teeth. I was going to try it last time out, but I ran out of time to do the swap. (Basically got lazy).

i thought you were running through 5 gears. unless the 14 rpms and gearing are way different from a 12. you may get the 8s getting it geared lower. unless the bigger 14 engine does not want to reve that quick.

The bike should have already went in the 8's...I'm just not riding it properly. The 14 has a lot more torque than the 12, so it doesn't need as much gear. It revs faster than you might think already.

I've already run the equivalent of up to 3 more teeth. I ran 16/45 on a short tire last year.

I've tried, so far:

17/43
17/45
17/46
16/43
16/45

Also a mix of of tires from 77"-79" in circumference. Wheelbase between 63-64.25". Race weights of 460-520 lbs. I'm still experimenting.

Let me answer your question with a question...

Why would I be focused on turning the most mph at the top of 5th? Do you think that turning the most mph at the top of 5th would be the best path to consistency and the quickest ET?

well i guess you could start by glueing the tire to that rear rim. is it still slipping on launch.

How much ET, MPH, and 60 foot do you think that is costing me? I mean, based on your vast experience of what it takes to consistently run 1.4 second 60 foots?

Why would you want to sling mud? After all, I said "no offense".

So at what wheelbase can I just launch from the rev limiter in 1st at without it flipping over? Assuming the rest of the bike from motor, clutch, transmission, drive chain, etc could take it....

What would the projected ET and MPH be....on a 12R of course.

I'd like to stick with the tried and true D207 Sportmax 200 series tire....42ish PSI....what sayeth the quick drag racers?

Would 19/44 gearing be best for the quickest ET with a 75" wheelbase launching on the rev limiter? ANYONE?!?!

You should really go for the .6 psi turbo, and spin the motor to 14k rpm. That's the way they do it down on Nucleon St....

In my experience (it's been a while), i got my best results gearing the bike so it crossed the line at the top of 5th (i saved 6th for safety).

My best ET's were often at less than best mph, but gearing as stout as I could gave best results.

How come every time I run C16 with -3 degrees of timing, no spray, 19/44 gearing and a stiff headwind the bike falls on its face in 6th gear?! Would it help if I didn't stand on the footpegs?

Where I'm at is trying to gear it as stout as I can, and still get the throttle open and clutch out quickly with control (my main focus). All of my gearing changes, and tire changes, come down to about a 3 tooth overall spread.

Since the bike does triple duty, I have done a lot of experiments with sprockets and tires. The wheelbase changes are just this season, since I dropped so much weight off of the bike (and 18 lbs. off of the front alone). At 460 lbs it doesn't need as much gear as last year.

I guess it could be said that I swap sprockets nearly as much as you do motors! I really enjoy working on the bike, and trying out different things along the way, as I'm sure you can appreciate.
