gearing with a MT slick?
finally got dads slick n bar bike to the track. 65 in WB, MT 7 in slick, pingle bars, MTC single stage lock up. motor is a 12.9:1 CR 1287, stock cams and valves, a light port match/ clean up done by me to the head, Muzzy SW, K&Ns. 260 lb suited driver. the track wasnt really prepped well so we were having wheel spin issues untill today(tire is over a yr old also so it may not be as good as it should be). he was running a bunch of low 9.4s @ 141-145 today. we turned the 2 step up and it launched a lot better, but was on the rev limiter at the end of the track. ran 9.37 @128. did it not shift or did he run out of gear?? we have it set up with 17 56 gearing, it auto shifts at around 12000 indicated (BBS auto shifter set at 11000 to trigger the NLR 2 step/kill box)
it shifted fine every other pass. he thinks it ran out of gear, im not sure. i have an 18 front we could try, and 50, 51, 52 rear.

Scott...Im not typing this to bash or saying how good i am...
I went to MIR this past friday and ran a 9.35 @ 147, 9.40 @ 147, 2- 9.41, 3- 9.43's, 2- 9.44's, 9.47, 9.48.....2002, 12 stock motor, stock clutch, 16-47gearing, foot shifting @ 61inches with pump gas and no pc...mph were from 147-144 due to heat and a little different shift points, but never past the redline...
Its really hard to say what the problem is because you guys have alot of variables added into your equations!!!.....What i do know is that 12's, 14's, Busa's are no bar bikes and dont work well with 2 steps and bars...Then your having the bike auto shift @ 12,000RPM?..Thats in the limiter!!!...17-56, is too much gear!!!
Less is more!!!

It didn't shift. 17/56 on a tire of 77" circumference should run a little over 150 mph at 11500 true rpm in 6th gear.
If it ran over 140 earlier in the day, that is your answer right there...
Use this:
http://www.gearingcommander.com
Remember, you may lose a couple mph off of what the chart says.

np, oh forgot to mention, his best run was a 9.30 at 144. i think it was with a 1.47 60. the goal is 8.99. i think a 1.35 60 may be possible, but its a heavy combo, hes going to get the billet low first for next season. untill then we will keep upping the 2 step and adding shim untill we have too much wheel spin. just need to tune and practise

you dont need a slider to get ET, so no your arent "telling it like it is" there was a bar bike at our track a few weeks ago running a single stage. he doesnt like sliders, and was showing me his setup. very nice guy, anyway to make a long story short, hes been high 7s

Scott your killin me...We are all talking ZX12's here.....I know your not talking about a 12 going high 7's
AND YES, Sliders ET better than any clutch set up...If you compare same bikes with different clutch set ups!!!
I learned that, so I pass it on!!!
Why do you think most GRUDGE BIKES have SLIDERS ???

Scott, turn the auto shift down to 11,800
16/56 on a 7 inch slick will go through the traps......(reliably Crotchrocket..., if it is set up right, I did it for years, most guys have them set up wrong, clutch, chassis, bar hieght, ect.)
back down the shift point, and it will be fine........, unless there is something else going on.......
what was the short time........, I was like 1.32 with 16/56, and like 136 with 16/52, or 16/54, depending on if I wanted a 5 speed or 6 speed

Most grudge bikes have sliders, because they eliminate problems with the left and right hand, etc.
a lock up can give fits if the rider is not consistent. the slider is different.
saying it was not set up as a bar bike originally is the problem is bunk.

I think we have it figured out Nox, thx.
it was the only time the bike has ever not shifted(tons of test runs on the road besides on the track lol), so maybe it was spinning. i was at the line on dads last pass of the day, it bogged some off the line. we know what to do.
we are trying to move a heavy bike and rider combo, so if we can get 1.40 next trip that will be good progress. he was in the 1.47-1.50 range. the tire is also over a yr old. we are getting a new one to eliminate that variable

Scott, just read the post........., about the tire pressure..........
I used to run 5.5 a ton....., at 175lbs.., go up to 7 or 7.5 to start with your dad, it should wrinkle on the line alittle, but not a ton.........
We had a bike this weekend, running a single stage, 16/54 gear, zzr12, launching at 7500, tossing the clutch, at 74 inches, (yes 74), wadding the tire up like a mo fo......., with 10 lbs in it......., those things are HEAVY.
