Muzzy hi pressure shifter - solenoid location?
I see some folks mounting the solenoid directly to the piston assembly, and other folks mounting it like the Muzzy directions show, near the regulator bottle.
Right now i have mine near the bottle and it shifts fine, not as "snappy" as my Dale Walker PS-3 shifted, but it does shift reliably.
Any comments here?
I am tweaking stuff in prep for Loring 1.5mile and might as well set it up the "right" way.

Karl - MIne is fine near the regulator however there clearly is a trend towards mounting on the ram

As far as I can tell, there would be no functional advantage to mounting near the bottle.
Advantages to mounting on the ram would include quicker action, and less likelyhood of leaks. I have mine mounted to the ram now.

I have mine next to the bottle in the hump as per instructions, but I do believe JC set Ralf's up next to the ram. Give him a call and see what he has to say.

thanks for the input!!
I'll call Cheese tomorrow at 6am (when i get updates)
As i said above, mine shifts fine, but kinda lazy; i LOVED the way the Dale Walker hit.
One time i measured the distance between tire marks on the 1-2 shift and it was 6" with Dale walker; Muzzy is more casual, but i never measured it.
Another benefit to moving it to the ram is a lil less "junk in the trunk", more room is good.

The advantage of getting the solenoid close to the ram is when bottle pressure gets lower it still can put enough volume at good pressure to the ram to make a quicker shift which means less delay and kill time. That is why your shifts are lazy. If your regulator is set at 150psi and you have 2ft of line from your sol. to the ram, the pressure that actually moves the ram is going to be substantially lower than 150psi because of how much volume goes through the line for the 50-70miliseconds the solenoid is open.

The makers of those type systems..., will tell you, you want it as close to the ram as possible........,
mount it on the ram. to heck with that muzzy set up........, it also leads to liquid getting in the valve.........

hmmmmm
i have my ram mounted horizontally, doesn't seem to be any easy way to mount the solenoid on the ram. won't fit on the motor side.
does anyone have a pic of it mounted on the outside? seems like a male-male NPT elbow might work.

haha, well, from someone who comes from the industrial control field (including pneumatic/hydraulic controls) thats a standard practice in any "good" setup. less to go wrong as well. the quick connects and hose become the weakest link then.. more connections and plastic line suck. slight bit more physical shock to the spool valve (which is what that technically is..) but they're pretty much designed for it anyway.

The advantage to mounting the solenoid close to the ram has been stated and proven. The advantage to it not being a direct (hardpipe) mount is that output testing is quick and easy (be it co2, n2o or standard compressed air), by keeping a quick release gauge on hand to show post solenoid pressure (it is however one more place to leak as WH stated if you don't have good mounting and quality connectors).
