turbo type help.. gurus?

ok.. got a lil question for ya's.. well, 2 questions.

got a potential customer who has a nasty ass 9-R. twin turbo with spray (not sure the jet on that..) sayd it runs like a 600 when it spools up, instead of a boosted 9-R.. i'm thinking ignition timing right off the bat. someone else told him retard the exhaust cam a bit.

now, sadly, you now know as much as i do since i have NO idea whats done to this thing.. jets, ignition, advancer, cams, ect.. i havve NO idea but i will gather this info.

anything i should look at (besides the obvious) right off the bat or any good round numbers to consider for timing or anything?

i "know" someone with an evil nasty turblow 9-R and might get some inside info from him, especially since the model matches as well.. but for technical stuff, i err to come here first.

as well, i just abaout have my license back and the bike together and am really ancy to get the thing boosted.. even if it's a "ghetto" build.. now, don't get me wrong, if it's done in the ghetto sense, it will be a beautiful build.. i'll just be using the wrong turbo.. thus my labeling as ghetto or wrong..lol my flow calc came to 149.7CFM at 10Krpm.. now, with that being said (and i just used 10K as a round number.. redline is almost 13) you think i can get away with running a .63 hotside (.48 cold) and at about 6psi and it will spool at a "reasonable" rpm?

i mean, i'm gonna guesstimate it'll spool at something stupid like 8K, but i played with that TDO4-L i have and it's got a .61 hotside and i could fill the cartridge up with oil and hold it to the exhaust pipe and it would spin with the bike at idle.

a .63 isn't THAT much bigger.. so i'm thinkin that maybe the M24 will work enough to give me a feel for what a turbo bike will do and how it will react, and let me start exploring tuning under boost and learning the curve for it all.

thoughts?

WH, I'm no guru, but here's my thoughts. On the first bike, who knows, I'd start with the basics.

On the turbine selection, a .63 is too large for a 750, go with a .48. There are lots of plain-jane T3s out there with .48 turbine housings for cheap, like $100. If you can find a 60 trim compressor, that would be nice, but almost any T3 would be fine. The junkyard T3s are almost always stage 1 turbines, but try to find a larger wheel if you can.

I used to use a .48 T3 turbine on my ZRX (and I use one now on my ZX10) - and once I swapped the housing for a .63 to see if I could pick up some high end power. Nope. It made the same peak, but took longer to get there. this was a 1080cc, 9.5:1 CR motor, ZX11 cams.

Anyway, I won't say that a .63 wouldn't work, but I can say that a .48 will work much better. Even a .36 would probably be better for the street.

When you get the 9R dialed in give me a call, I can jump on a stocker and have a spot about 1 hour away we can do roll-ons...would make for some great footage!

thanks for the replies!

Dean, i have plans on using a T25.. it's got a nice little .45 hotside.. i may hit up the bobcat dealers in the area.. not sure whats on the S185 at the warehouse i work at but it's a tiny little thing.. looks nice..

might have a turboless turbo bobcat there soon!! haha

i know the .63 is too big, but the flanges are the same from the looks of it, so i figured i could at least build the damn thing, throw the uber snail on it, and when i find the right one, swap em out on a rainy day..

Ali, i'll definitely get at ya on that!! haha.. i've seen your vids on youtube man..

i've been meaning to call ya anyway but either get horribly sidetracked or when i do remember, figure it might be an inconvenient time.. i'll figure somethin out..lol

Scott, that site is amazing.. i saw it for the first time a few days ago and was incredibly impressed with the knowledge and all on there.. definitely might have to get a hold of that guy in particular.. he's kinda like their Doug/Jim i saw..lol

so, heres what he said about the mods..
"smallest turbos you can get cant think of what they are off hand.. 122 jets on all carbs. dual exhaust/ dual turbos 1-2 for one turbo 3-4 for other.. nothing done one ignition nothing on cams. fuel has efi pump and rising rate fuel presure regulator.. gonna need to do full rebuild damn thing is spitting oil so thats part of problem. putting jets at 122s helped but not fully taken care of issues"

i'm really leaning on timing now..
