Gas Tank Advice
I just bought a new set of fairings and gas tank for my old 900 ninja and am planning on restoring it. I am going to take the engine out and at least replace the valves, rings, timing chain, see what else needs replacing. With my schedule and lack of experience doing this kind of work i am sure it will be at least a few months before i get it put back together.
The new gas tank is absolutely shiny and perfect on the inside, and was delivered to me full of gas. My question is, what would be the best way to keep the tank perfect in the next 3 months? Should i take the gas cap off my old tank, clean it up, and put it on the new one that is full of gas (and add some stabilizer)? Or should i totally empty the new tank and leave it dry until ready to use?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Also if there is something else i should definitely be replacing while inside the engine, please give me opinions on that too.

i would either put in some stabil and put a cap on it, or drain it and oil it
check the cam chain guides for cracks, oil pump for scratches. do you really need to replace the valves? i would just clean them, lap them and set lash
maybe a good time to do new crank and rod bearings?

Thanks for the advice. I am really not sure if i need to replace them or not. I got a shop manual and i am just going to start taking it apart and see what is out of spec, i guess. It was startiing to run not so great last time i parked it a few years ago (crazy backfiring and such). A few people have suggested the valves are probably bad and that would be the reason for the backfiring. Maybe they just meant exactly what you are suggesting. Would you think the cam chain should be replaced (65,000 miles), or would you expect the guides to be the only thing needing replacing there?
