IMO you could try using silicone; i can't see how it is needed for spacing.

Yep, as you will quickly find out if you do cold cranking pressure with the cover off

ok, so the cover takes the oil to the bolt holding the stator on. does this really need to have a constant flow of oil?

so upon further inspection, the gasket heavily restricts the oil flow to the cover. the oil passage ways in the case/cover are about 1/8-3/16 in and the hole in the gasket is about .052 in(a .052 drill bit fit and a .055 did not) it looks like the oil pressure dislodged any silicone in its way and made the hole in the gasket its normal size. so if someone was to just silicone the cover on without the gasket, or without some other way to restrict flow, there would be a huge pressure loss to the rest of the motor(like bearings... ouch)

Scott for the 10 or 20 bucks it costs for a new gasket I wouldn't take the chance. I would just buy a new one. My

YMMV

getting one within 2 weeks is the issue... its a gamble at the dealership lol. i did clean up the old one and its actually better than i thought(useable)
im wondering if it would be detrimental to the stator to run it dry? there are no moving parts touching that need oiled. maybe just kept cool? or to prevent rusting? im thinking that if its blocked, more oil goes to the bearings....

Don't block the hole, I accidently blocked mine with some silicone one time. The stator was black and had a burnt smell when I had to replace it. I assume the oil is there to keep it cool.

Hmm, I can't say I've ever replaced one of these gaskets. I clean em up and smear a thin layer of ultra black on em and go with it. Heck, I do that on pretty much everything. But then again, I'm a hack.

I've said many times- Nothing is there "just for the hell of it" If the engineers designed in some "feature", it's there for a reason. Remember, it's probably cheaper to leave it out-- but they didn't.
