Whoo, Black Diamond

Out on the street for a living
Picture's only begun
Got you under their thumb
Hit it

Ok, Ill stop singing, but Im happy got the head back from Jim at Competition.
Replace (EX) Valve Seats With O/S Bronze Seats
Valve Job, 1mm O/S Valves, 89% choke
Hand Lap Deck Surface
Premium Viton Valve Seals
Kibble White, ZX-12R Black Diamond (EX) Valves 1mm O/S

I think this will be a much safer combo for nitrous this yr. next winter Ill probly get the Inlet side done, but this was it for my budget this trip around. extra wide seats in addition to the different seat material should keep the valves much cooler, and they are SS so much tougher than the stock valves. the head should breath better too as Jim did a little hand blending for me on both sides.
I did notice a small machine mark in one of the combustion chambers and the corresponding seat has a larger OD(i really doubt it will affect anything, that valve may actually run a touch cooler?). did one of the stock seats damage the head on removal?

I asked about stickers and he threw a few in the box for me im going to cut the black ones oval and put them on the bike, I put a white one as is on my truck with my small collection of other race stickers

using my 1 season old Carpenter springs Karl. sticking with stock rev limit, still running stock cams. they only had about 7 wknds of running on them. 2 with spray. a few break in street miles. Im guessing they are still around 60ish seat pressure if not the full 65. i tried measuring seat pressure but didnt have a good setup....

did a little extra hand blending on the ex ports tonight to get them as smooth as they were before. i didnt touch the inlet side. I noticed that some of the seats looked like they werent "all the way in" is this normal? will they move and change my valve clearances and ptv after its fired up?

I lapped the valves very lightly. tomorrow ill check valve clearances....

One seat is the next size up, a little bigger O/D, we have 3 custom sizes made for the zx12's. Rob had to go to the next size up on that one it didnt bore out nice.
Theres a small chamfer under the seat, so It may look like a gap. They wont move theres .006" interfearance fit.

Scott, next year bigger buckets and the stage 2 CNC porting!!!

Ryan, I'll put a few stickers in the mail for ya.

Is common for the seats to get damaged during removal? Is that due to the oversize valve work?

Is there a reason to have the exhaust ports "rough"? It that they way the machine does it? Or does it even matter?

Sorry for all of the dumb questions, I'm just trying to learn something...

Once you remove the old seats they are junk. You have to bore the head for the new seats which are slightly bigger o/d than the old seats. We use 3 different O/D seats for busas and 12's and 14's depending on application and if there is any damage. Then the new seats are pressed in with about .006" interference fit.

We didn't do CNC porting on this head. But the CNC leaves a nice smooth finish. With a .020" step-over and a 3/8" ball cutter the scallop height is about .0002" If you were to look at many of the automotive CNC ported heads out there you will see major differences between surface finishes. The mass production cnc ported heads usually have a large step over (distance between each cutter pass) as much as .080"-.100" giving a rough port finish. They do this because each time you cut the step-over in half you double the time it takes to port the head. A .050" step-over is most common in most of the CNC porting you see. We never ever use more than a .040" step-over on anything. And on all high velocity ports like bike heads we use a .020" step-over. It takes 3 times longer for us to do the heads but the results are much more laminar airflow.

Once you get down to a step-over of .030" or less, the surface finish isn't as important as you would think. There is no HP difference between leaving the cnc marks of a .020" step-over and polishing the ports. A .050" or .060" step-over however would benefit from additional polishing.

There not dumb questions at all. Knowing the questions to ask can be as difficult as finding out the answers.

a few more pics after i did some extra blending and lapping the valves

this one shows the chamfer i thought was a gap. the seats that have been "blended more" have the chamfer pretty much removed.
