New for 2003?

Okay guys, I'm new here ( well, not new, just enjoyed the reading for a few months ). Anyway, I currently run an R1 with spray. Well, it's time to go new again. I've been thinking about the new Busa or Suk 1000 or maybe the 12. I want to be able to run 6.0/5.9 off the gas. I'll have about 5 or 6 grand for mods for the new bike ( selling the R1 ). I'm open for suggestions. What would you do?

I meant, does anyone have any suggestions on which bike would be best for the upcoming year. I plan on taking the bike to either Lee or Shawn Gann. I'm from North Click and most of the guys ( and girls ) from around here use them.

If you have no personal preference, you're probably better off with a Busa. More parts availability, more displacement, more tuning experience. You could get in the fives without power adders no sweat.

Gann motor will cost you,of course the Busa's the best way to go for the big"motor"and nitrous motor set up's(real world),but, the 12's have made an impact on a higher level then all of us weekend drag racers, the muzzy turbo ZX-12 is faster and quicker then ANY busa in ama prostar SBS class and 12's are faster then ANY suzuki make to date in formula superbike class(strait motor). The ZX12'S in both classes are bikes from muzzy.Of course a lot of this could be the riders,Gadson,Schnitz,Chip ellis(Coby Adams),and $$$,fact is,no Busa is close to the bikes these guys ride,a blackbird(Kent)is gadson's only real competition, and just to remind you,the Busa's had over 4 different companies manufacturing turbo kit's and running them before the first one for the ZX12 came out-over a year later,a little hard fact to consider.

Butttt!!If I was to do it again,I'd buy an ugly ass busa and throw a carpenter motor w/a direct port wet kit in it,sneak in a slider, and go 60" and spend about $1800 on supension and chassis, ride it to the drag strip and bust off a few 8.50's,then ride a wheelie down the freeway after the event passing all the 68inchers on trailers on the way home.

If I could do it all over again... egads. Your plan sounds good INTRA.

I'm as much of a Kawasaki fan as the next guy, and Busas are kinda funky looking IMO, but I'll venture that Kent Stotz and Bill Hahn would have done just as well (better?) with a Busa if they had picked up a Suzuki Rider's Assoc sponsorship instead of Honda's.

It was kinda funny to hear the Bazooki boys doubletalk about the lack of a 7sec SBS Busa, before Velocity & NLR put a stop to it.

I say pick whatever bike tickles your turnip. Get one you like to look at in the garage.

Okay, so it seems that it's either the Busa or the 12. No one thinks that the a Lee's performance tuned 1000 could compete? I weigh around 185 and I could get the R1 running 6.4 consistent and 6.2x on the gas. My problem was when running little guys, I could beat them off the line and hold them off until the 8th, then they would pull me in on the big end. I really am leaning towards the Busa because of my weight and like you guys say there are more guys familiar with it. I have a buddy with a Gann built motor on his Busa that I fell in love with. But, for what he paid, I could get a turbo.

Uh I just went through this. Yes Dean is correct. The Busas are just like the old oil cooled GSXR motors. Parts aplenty! But EVERYONE AND THEIR FAMILIES have one.
If you can ride, ANY bike will be fast. I think its funny when you get fast riders on the 12s and then all the Busa crowd starts crowing 1361, nitrous, or "teardown"! (or something ludicrous)
I know you can buy a new 2002 ZX12 for well under $10k. Another $1500 on top of that and you have a solid dependable low 9second bike. Spend a few $$$s more and you could be in the eights and ride home after test and tune.
I prefer the ergos of the 12 over the Busa. THe BUsa is electric smooth though.
You probably get more looks keeping a Busa stock...believe it or not!

Point taken!!! Everybody's riding the Busa. There is only one guy that's decent around here with a 12. He's running low 9's on gas. And like you said " rides to the track ". That's the selling point for me. I can't afford two bikes, so I need to be able to ride it more than a 1/4 mile at a time. Plus I could save a little $$$$ with the 12 as far as mods go. I've read that they are running 8.9s with a multistage nitrous system.

willie, if you weigh 185ish, and you were *already* riding to a 6.4 on the R1, then a 12R with a short extension of 3"-6" and a SINGLE stage nitrous would get you to an 8.9x IMHO. (properly tuned and set-up of course)

I went with the 12R for two reasons.
1. I had previously owned a 6R and a 9R.
2. For Drag Racing, there were just TOO MANY of them (BUSA'S) at my track. I wanted to do something people hadn't seen yet!!

For someone new to drag-racing,.....I'd recommend the Busa. You sound like you need the 12.

I like both, ride both bikes. We (ZX12 Girl) decided to own both. IMO, the Busa has more build potential in the aftermarket and a solid engine that can go real big than the 12. Guess it depends to on what type of riding you are doing. If you want a serious (Real world)drag racing platform then, "Cmon on over to the DARK SIDE" Busa If you want to do the strip thing on the weekends and ride around town and through the twisties then get a 12.

Hey, I just want to tell everyone thanks for the input. This is exactly what I was looking for. I've even got a couple of good offers on email. I don't do a lot the ( twisties ) just a little evening cruisin and ofcourse the 1/4 mile sprint. I do have one question, it seems the 12 would be more streetable than a big motor Busa, is there anything I could do to the 12 to ease the effects of the nitrous. I have a buddy that has a single 50 shot on his 12, and he seems to think he's lost a couple of horses over the summer. My R1 just keeps on ticking and seems to have not lost anything. Speaking of which, I just spanked a Suk 1000 yesterday. He gave me the break ( of course ) and couldn't get back. And I didn't even use the gas.
