EGT options
for those of you running a turbo or nitrous and logging/monitoring EGT levels, are you just running a dash gauge? idiot light if things get too hot? what about something that would shut off nitrous (or back off the boost) if things get too hot?
thx

you bring up a good idea.
reminds me of this guy in a 4th gen supra running what looks like an 05 10-R
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2sQ9I9a_Ac
watch his AFR (red LED gauge..) and the EGT (middle gauge in the a-pillar pod)
F me running.
shit sounds like it chucked a rod at the end..lol
that being said, i will incorporate a low-boost cut-in solenoid based on EGT on my bike. i'll be too busy trying not to crash or die to monitor the gauges i think..
i'm (going to be) running variable boost anyway, so it should be very easy to do.

ill have to check that out next time im at my buddys house or sisters apt (im on dial up )
Dr Gary, VH, are you out there? any pics of your setups?
im wondering if i should maybe get 4 thermocouples and find the hottest pipe and log from that, then if i upgrade my logger next yr i could log all 4....

Man KZ, I am an EGT newbbie. The Gauge I have is digital and I can't pull a wire off the circuit board. maybe shoot Innovative a call or email. I guess you might be able to set it up so that when the temp reached a certain voltage you could hook it to a relay to kill the spark and/or fuel pump/pumps...................or maybe just kill the nitrous system.
You may find that temps get hot real fast. I was blown away (lol) what some of the big turbo guys egt temps ran on LSR stuff. I do not know where they placed the egt sensor though ...........but 1600F is perty toasty.

i had an idea of having a "scanning" input.. make a little hub orf sorts that rolls thru cylinders 1-4 at a settable interval (say every 2 seconds or so).. have 4 thermocouples, but have them terminate at the hub and let it send the info to just 1 display.
this should work on O2 as well, but would be stupid expensive running 4 wideband sensors!!
thoughts?

WH you seem to be going down the same road I was on a couple years ago. I had a plan to scan the 4 TCs and use only one analog input on my datalogging system.
I planned on using connecting the 4 TCs to a multiplexer:
http://www.analog.com/en/other/militaryaerospace/adg507a/products/product.html
Then the output from the multiplexer to a TC amplifier
http://www.analog.com/en/temperature-sensing-and-thermal-management/digital-temperature-sensors/ad595/products/product.html
and that output to an analog in on the DAQ board.
The board would also have to provide 2 digital outputs (count 0-3 in binary) to run the multiplexer. On the software side, the sort the analog input data by the digital count. This would give separate logs for all 4 EGTs using only one analog input. I planned to sample at 40Hz to give 10Hz data per channel.
Sampling once every 2 seconds would make it easy to read on a gauge, but you could potentially be missing a lot of useful data. EGTs respond quickly when there is a problem in the engine.
About a year ago, I bought my TCs, installed them, then got impatient. I decided it would be alot faster and easier to buy a multichannel TC board than to hassle with the multiplexer project.

Hmm.. very good point sir.. i was thinking simple switching transistor array and 4 ins, one out, all analog with no amp or D/A or A/D conversion. i was also unaware of a multichannel gauge..lol..
i'm not too big into the whole data logging/ gauges/whats out ther thing yet as alot of this is kinda new to me.. i'm still reading up figuring out what loggers everyones running and what they do and all!
