4.5 sec @ 2-3psi oil pressure =

Whew, there are no gold specs in the oil pan, so bearings must be OK

wait a minute, the bearings are gone???

And what's all this BLACK shit????

#3 rod will probably need to be sized, I'll send it to Jim today.

had the drop in oil pressure from about 4000 rpm thru 11600 rpm in 1st gear...

Very expensive scrap, but at least the motor did not seize up and give you a Berclair Body Cast.. Glad you are OK and can race another day which turned out to be the NEXT day. Super thrash Karl & Doug=real racers. LSL

You should have used Prolong oil treatment. It works great in the commercials.

Karl, Maybe we can weld up that #3 rod?

The wire wheel should get all the black off.

Nox,
yep you have seen it before, and likely my failure is the same as what you saw.

I have had the swinging oil pickup on 1/4mi hundreds of passes with no problem.

This time it was pointed fwd and didn't swing until i hit 2nd; logs are very clear.

But, BUT, the fault is mine not the pan/pickup design.

There was some kinda grit/shit in the swing bearing, swings stiff.

I did NOT check the swing bearing when i assembled the motor. My fault.

and expensive lesson...

That's what I was thinking!

You and Bill have all kinda fancy machines, I sure you can fix #3, polish up the others, buy a couple bolts, GTG!!!

Can you explain a little bit about the piston? Is that showing where a valve was hitting and are those pit marks from detonation? On the outside of the valve pockets,is that where people have been smoothing out to reduce hot spots?

all exh valves tapped a bit cause the bearings were GONE, not just spun, but gone.

I haven't seen detonation previously, and it is just on that one piston.

yep on the smoothing of sharp edges/ supposed hot spots, but i quit doing that smoothing, doesn't seem to make any difference either way. If i was running nitrous i would start doing the smoothing again.

The crank isn't going to Marine, too far gone. 1/2" deep gouge in #3 rod journal
it's gonna lie in ambush for the County guy who runs a brush hog through my bone-yard bushes now and again.

be sure to doublecheck the torque on that main cap when you reinstall it.

Karl, is that what happened on that last run in Berclair? Or have you ridden it since? You would think I could have heard something that looks like that, no matter how far away I was. Ouch I hate it when that happens.

How do you know the grit wasn't from the motor going or clutch fibers?

I don't know anything for sure, but i do know the pick up used to swing freely, and it didn't swing this time.

when we took apart the motor:

Karl, like they said a little wire wheel some buffing compound and that crank and rod set are ready for e-bay!

Seriously though, that hurts! Glad you rode it out nice and smooth. Your wife and I were very concerned when we saw the mosquito fogger action.
