quote: i was reading about different thermocouples. aparently you can make one to fit under a spark plug(under the gasket) i bet the log file would be interesting from that!
It is common on air cooled aircraft engines. The pilot has guidelines for max CHT and duration allowed close to that max. If one cylinder starts detonating, that cylinder's CHT will jump rapidly and sound an alarm. The pilot should have time to pull throttle before a piston meltdown.
I was considering this about a year ago. But was convinced by some very experienced people that it would be useless on a water cooled engine. On the 12, the spark plug is surrounded by the water jacket. The thermocouple readings would be much lower than on an air cooled engine. They would not be a direct reading of combustion chamber temp, but closer to water temp. Believe it or not, I've seen my water temp continously DROP during a top speed run. The cooling capacity is huge when you have 175+mph airflow through the radiator.
If you find anyone who has tried individual CHT probes for an application similar to ours, I would love to see their results.

I believe you on the temp drop! it happens at 140. warm the bike up, burn out, stage. temp at "9 o clock" make a 1320 pass, in the return road, temp is way down. usually climbs back up past "9" however once back to the pits
I wonder how a thermocouple would do in the actual exh port? we allready have the holes from the smog junk....

quote: hey rgeorge, what kinda data logging are you running that can map that out for you?
That log is from a couple years ago when all I had was the WEGO II. It logs RPM, TPS and AFR. I did a lot of data manipulation in Excel. I cleaned the RPM data around the shift points, then multiplied by the gear ratios to get a trace for wheel speed (not shown above). Calculate the rate of change of wheel speed and you get wheel acceleration. 1 G is 32.2 ft per sec per sec.
Since then, I have made major upgrades to my data collection system. I still have the WEGO, but its only purpose is to output a voltage based on AFR to the rest of the system. Data is collected by a small National Instruments data acquisition unit. It collects RPM, VSS (wheel speed sensor) and 8 analog inputs at 10 KHz. I also have a Measurment Computing 8 channel thermocouple DAQ board monitoring 4 EGT probes. The DAQ boards are connected to a mini ITX computer in the bikes tail. 1GHz processor, 1GB ram and an 80GB hard drive gives me unlimited logging time. On the software side, I have a Labview vi setup that processes the data and saves a log file. It also creates an alarm if something is out of the allowable range and automatically disarms the nitrous system. A summary of the data is shown realtime on a 7in LCD monitor on the bikes dash.
In the past, Ive spent a lot of time playing with the data in Excel to create graphs like the one above. One of my current projects is setting up an import function in OriginLab (much more powerful than excel) to process the data and generate graphs for me automatically after a run.

damn rgeorge.. sounds more like a fuggin space shuttle.
man.. i'm with dane.. lol
you were a touch above my head there with wheel speed calculations and all. i have no idea at all how to do any of that.. i'd like to learn at some time tho when i start racing.. i wanna blow ppl's heads off with technodrivel like you just did to me..
i have a feeling i could not even afford te cables that connect that shit together. let alone the instruments and sensors.
think anyone has broken ones they'll sell or donate?
