valve shim/clearance calculator

Awhile back I remember reading about a calculator or "chess move" tool that when given shim sizes and measured clearances, moved the shims around to give a more uniform clearance. does anyone have this that they could share? I assembeled dads cylinder head tonight and the clearances are everywhere because i didnt get any shims with the "complete" head we got, so i used ones from the old head.
oh and whats your favourite shim kit to buy? we will need at least 4 as there were 2 bad ones in my head on teardown as well as 2 bad ones in dads bad head. getting a valve job on my head will probly change a few things too.
thx guys

KZscott...

The shim kit I use is from Hotcams, here's a place that sell them for 79.00 bucks

i use tcchin's spreadsheet.

it doesn't do chess moves but i don't think that would be overly useful for my purposes.

Tim turned me onto Honda 450 shims, same diameter as the 12, but they come in .001 increments rather than kwak .002, so i set all valves to a specific number, .008 int, .011 exh.

Calculator? What's wrong with the chart on page 4-21 in the manual?

Here are some tricks for those who haven't done this a lot-
I always do the head off the engine if possible, and these tips reference that method (you can also do it on the complete engine with obvious changes). Build or buy a head stand set.(Try Goodson) They're really cheap/simple. In a pinch you can set the head on a couple of pieces of 2x4, but then you end up chasing it all over the bench like a greased pig. INSTALL AND DO ONE CAM AT A TIME. I learned this the hard way on my road to becoming an expert. If you try and bolt in both cams without having them timed and working together you will bend valves or break the caps. That may seem obvious but sometimes people only think about V to P and not V to V.
Assy lube is not necessary here, just some light engine oil.

Accumulate or buy (or borrow) at least eight 250 shims. Install all eight and bolt in a cam with the sprocket installed. Turn the cam to the usual timing position with a broad rounded pry tool on the sprocket levered on the edge of the head, (like an old LARGE screwdriver) just like it would be if it was in the bike. Sometimes a gloved hand is required to help position the cam and keep it from snapping over as the nose of the cam lobes passes tdc on the buckets (ZX-12) or rockers (ZX-11). You'll figure it out. Check the valves on two of the cylinders LIKE THE MANUAL SAYS. Note the clearances and turn the cam 180 degrees. Note the clearances. Now you have eight numbers that are very large (for clearances).
Each shim size jump is .05mm or .0025". I work in inches, so I just subtract the clearance I'm looking for (let's say .008 for an inlet) from the clearance I've got, let's say .015. In this example that would be .007. So I have to close up the clearance by .007". Since each size thicker is .0025", if I divide the .007 by .0025 that is 2.8 which means I need to go 2.8 sizes larger- so I go three sizes - that's a 265.
Generally I can do this in one pass. Cam in with 250's, measure, change, re-measure and I'm good. Sometimes
I need another pass.

If you need to fudge, can't get just what you want, always err to the greater clearance (thinner shim). Clearances never grow over time, they always close up. This is especially true on a "fresh" head, i.e., one that has just been worked on or assembled.

If you are building in an effort for maximum HP and will be inspecting the engine frequently, err to the tight side (but be careful). By going tighter you maximize the area under the lift curve, but decrease V to P.

Don't be afraid to ask your favorite service mgr. to trade shims, but don't be offended if he doesn't want your 260 because he has 30......

If you have a stand and the shims at hand you can do a head in less than an hour easy and not even get your hands dirty.
That help?
Doug

just perfect.... nobody local can get the sizes i need, and the hotcams kit has too big of increments between sizes to set the clearances uniformly. im not a fan of "in the range". i have shims that are accurate to 3 decimal places(example: 2.355mm, 2.405mm), why are the dealers only accurate to 2? (same as the hot cams kits, ex: 2.35, 2.40, 2.45) i even tried honda and suzuki. it doesnt really make sense to me that the factory would have a wider range of shims than a dealer. the hot cams kit is a great deal if you need the sizes in the kit, $0.60 per shim. local guys wanted $5-$7 per shim
how much are the honda shims you get Karl?

Tim Chin turned me onto honda CRF 450 shims, dia = 9.5mm same as a 12.
They come in .001" (+/-, they are metric) increments.

BUT be careful with all shims, if you are persnickity, measure ea one, they often times vary...

i had the mic out on all them! the numbers were only half there.
I asked the honda parts guy about the crf 450 shims. no luck, they just had hot cams stuff with the large increments. he couldnt order the ones i wanted either, the oem ones he could order were the same sizes as the hot cams kits. do you get your shims locally or order them online? i need 14... out of both bikes i had 2 shims that gave me the correct clearance on dads head

Sorry - I've been at the races, and haven't had time to forum.

Any Honda dealer can order Honda CRF450 shims (e.g., 14954-MEB-670 #252). If you can't convince your local dealer of that, you can always order them online for about $5-6 each. The nice thing about using the Honda shims is that they come in .001" increments, making the calculations really easy. Need .003" more lash? Get a shim that's three sizes thinner.

Chart? We don't need no steenking chart! (Just kidding, Doug!) I wrote the shim calculator (Excel workbook) as a sanity check, as I always seem to be adjusting valves during the wee hours of the morning, when my cognitive appreciation of "smaller-means-larger" is somewhat impaired. Lemme know if you want a copy.

I made my own cylinder head stands from Doug Fir 2x4's and red oak dowels. They're cheap and absolutely cannot damage your cylinder head. I can send you pics/plans, if you're interested.

I adjust lash on the bench too, but I use an open-ended wrench and the cam sprocket bolts to rotate the cams. The bolts are cheap and easily replaceable if they get rounded (unlikely), and you don't risk damage to the sprockets or the gasket surface like using the prying method will. If you must rotate the cams by prying, be sure to protect the gasket surface with a sacrificial scrap of wood or soft metal.

I usually measure one cylinder at a time with the cam lobes pointed 180* away from the buckets, which is not what the manual recommends. I guess I'm just too lazy to line up timing marks and remember which cylinders to check at that mark.

better late than never Tim. ill rattle off the part number to the parts guy tomorrow and see whats up.

i would love a copy. could you email it to s_u_fire@hotmail.com plz?

i used 2x4s, and was suprised that the head didnt move all around. i think its because everything was on a towel. good idea about the dowels. im pretty sure i have a visual of what you made.

what i did to turn the cams was cut a notch in the hard plastic of an old screw driver, placing the notch in the teeth of the sprocket and just tap tap tap the sprockets around with a hammer

thank you Tim and Karl!
Tim, my visual was quite different. i thought you were using the dowels to fit in the head like the factory dowels that fit in the head/block. you put the head at an angle to make checking the clearances easier eh?
Nice list Karl. Ive been busy with my truck, so i have been away from the bikes, gotta check some things out tomorrow locally

We were wondering where you went. We were afraid something bad happened with you and the DPTW Barbies.

With the dowels in a Y-configuration, you can put the head at any angle you want, even upside-down. They make good porting stands, too, as the head can be held in just the right position so your head and neck don't have to.

How'd you make out with the valve lash spreadsheet? Are those some mondo formulas or what?
