Poll Question:
aftermarket cams

I've never seen anyone do a poll on cams here before so I'll throw it out there.I'm interested in the twelve but if you want to throw the 14 in,fine.Application would be for top end (drag racing or LSR)What does everyone prefer?

right now 2 stock inlet cams in my 1287 due to the cost of after market cams. if i had extra money i would look into big ones. I forget the exact combo, but i think Brickman had a good setup for 1287cc, and im sure Karl could tell you all about the cam options hes been thru

Pete,
yr question is very open ended, kinda hard to address.

Both Web and Megacycle will give you about any grind you want, whereas Muzzy has one option.
The Muzzy cams worked fine in my motor.

I'm running a Web set now and they are also fine.

Jim is your best source on cam advice for your set up. He knows yr motor.

Are you going to run at Loring???

I almost wonder if not that many are actually running a different cam.I have talked to Jim and have one in mind if I can afford it.I Don't know squat about the degrees and lift as opposed to where it will effect the power.Look how much debate goes into a pipe which is around the same price range. There is a big difference between the price for a Muzzy and Web or megacycle.I prefer to make the choice only once.Maybe I want to know if a certain cam will bring me out of the power band every time I shift with my weight?I don't know. What made you change cams from Muzzy's?How much of an effect was it? I don't think I will run at Loring because I always like to get an idea of what is involved.I'ld hate to finally get the motor together and blow it due to prolonged wot.

i went away from Muzzy cams cause a simulation based on my specific set up indicated i could benefit from higher lift on the intake. That comes with a price, need bigger intake buckets.

The differences aren't big. I wouldn't stress on it. Jim will tell you the best choice, gettum from Web or Megacycle bc they are cheaper.

I'm freshening up my engine and going with the Muzzy's that Karl went away from.......Mine is gonna be just a plain jane basic 1287.

If it wasn't for wanting to run the Mile's, I would have probably just stuck with the stockers. Coby likes the stock cams for small motors.

Most of the parts came in while we were working Bike Week, being gone two weeks slowed me down but I'm really in no hurry.
I couldn't believe how great the transmission / shift forks, etc. looked after 30,000 hard miles.......the engine looked great too.
Haven't pulled the caps to check the bearings yet...........man it would have been a good time to put a big crank in, maybe next time!
I got some 65# springs for your old cams. Thanks for the deal and all your info.

The weather has finally broke and we've gotta get some much needed camping in (just got a new, small toy hauler for the KLR) then I'll get started back on the scooter.

Hard to beat the stock cams N/A with a stock ECU (rev Lmit). The Muzzy cams have a pretty special shape that can only come from far far away and some very very expensive R&D, (if you get my drift).
They really only benefit if you can rev to 13.

How high will the reflash take you and what would the piston speed be at that rpm?Sounds like that kind of motor would be a yearly rebuild.

I've got a DaveO extended ECU. Tried it out on the dyno before pulling the motor. It raised the rev limiter by 600rpm according to the DJ250 it was on, hope that's enough for the cams to work.
I do have a new Muzzy Pro Pipe I'm looking forward to trying!

Nice thought KZ but records are alot harder to come by these days. Sure would be nice to build a top notch 1348 to stay within the 1350cc class but unless our new president sends some of that $$$ my way, it's 1287 for now.

I have a 1340 in a box for sale........ Only needs fresh 1270 pistons.

With good valve springs a 12 is good to 12.8-13. We ran 13.2 pretty regular.

RR can take you to 12700 i think, and you can do the crystal mod on top of that if you feel the need(over 13000 then with the stock computer). i think Karl is running 12500 and piston speed wasnt even an issue yet?

I routinely do 12000 steps on the FacPro dyno, but i sure wouldn't say that piston speed isn't an issue unless deforming the piston skirts is normal...

how much of that is from rod to stroke ratio Karl? i didnt think the piston speeds were as high as a busa when it had been discussed before
