1427 zx12r Build

Well the old y2kzx12r is going to get a fresh build this year after having been apart for 2 seasons on the back burner. I took it apart as a 1375 for routine maintainance after 3 seasons and several thousand hard street miles. Other projects and things kept the bike in the back corner of the shop for a few years, but not the cobwebs are coming off.

This past fall I decided to make it a 1427.

Karl, I'm gonna run the same 60mm crank. I'd love to get a billet crank but not this time around.

Its still mostly in the planning stages but I'm sending out the cams to get ground with "special" grinds that should take advantage of the big valve Stg 2 head.

Jim,
i had a pisser time with wrist pin galling until i went to an offset crank.

my advise?
sell yr stroker crank for $500 + stocker, spend an additional $600 to get the crank stroked and offset. It will save you a ton of aggravation.

Scott knows what usually causes writs pin galling, right Scott?

If I was to go that route Karl, I wouldnt need to sell the crank. Just get it offset ground.

I know what your next question is going to be...

is the only reason you are staying with a 4.6mm crank because you allready have one? im suprised you didnt opt for a 5mm or bigger. im pretty sure you can make a big stroker live a long time

Yep, Basically I'm using it because I have it.

But Karl has a point its better to have the rod centered. Maybe I'll set it up so the pistons guide the rods on this one.....? Would be worth a few HP but a PITA to setup.

WH, at some point there will be pics, but I'll have to have somthing to take pics of...

uhhhhh, please elucidate

before i went to an offset crank, the inside of the wrist pin bosses were rubbing on the rod sm ends, even tho when i had checked static there was some clearance. Go figure.
The galling was pretty ugly, had to drive the pins out with a hammer.

I had the boss-to-boss width opened up and no more rubbing, but the galling continued.

With the offset, obviously no rubbing, and now it is satisying to push the pins out with fingers, or just very minor tapping.

Cup engines are using piston guided rods for the last several years. The rods dont ever touch the crank or the companion rod on the sides of the rod. Reduces friction because the crank pins and loading dont let the rods "float" like you might think. They get jambed and shoved together under load like a clutch pack.

Wow, you guys are real engine GURU'S....Also, for a peace of mind just have the wrist pins DLC coated and that alone helps with friction and virtually eliminates galling or rubbing in case there is an oil pressure issue !!! Just my .2cents.....

I noticed CP piston pins are DLC coated allready.... i wonder if it would be wise to buy a set, or have a set of JE pins coated?

I have a set of the DLC coated pins from CP. They are nice pins. A bit pricey at about 100-125 dollars per pin if I remember correct. It's been a while since I bought them so I can't be 100% certian about the price.

If I had it to do over again I probably would just buy the standard pins. I don't think you gain a whole lot from the coated pins. A little less friction maybe. That and they sure look pretty.

When I had my 12 and was running the Carpenter cams they were just eating the buckets. I switched to a set of DLC buckets from Muzzy and that problem went away. So there I have to say the DLC coating was worth it. That was a long time ago (around 2002) but I think they were 800-900 dollars for a set of buckets. I think I could have also solved the problem with oversize buckets but didn't know anything about it back then.

It might be worth it on the pins on this build.

I dont know what the cam specs are on the carpenter cams but it sure sounds like they were running off the bucket.
O/S buckets would be a little cheeper even with the boring of the head vs. getting new buckets and coating them.
