wanna have FUN?: change out yr main wiring harness!
yep, its a ball!
And to add even more joy to the project, i need to tap into it for data logger, shift light, gear indicator, muzzy air shifter.
reminder:
EITHER put out the cig OR hook up the fuel hoses before turning on the key for testing
next i will change out the ign switch and the sub harness for the coils.
My 9 YO wires and connections got undependable, time to upgrade...

I have a standing appointment, every Sat at 11am
Currently working on assuring that ign voltage is clean and to spec, right now my coils were getting low voltage. I wanna get it to spec and see if it makes any difference.

Karl, you are my inspriation.
The list of stuff you find or fix makes me understand how small my problems really are.
I put a harness on the 14 chasing a wiring problem. It's not that bad, 2 hours max.
Thanks big guy.

hey Gerard,
yep, just running the harness is not real bad, cutting into it and adding all that other stuff just adds a bit of time. Firing it up and fixing the fukups is inevitable.
You ARE coming down to the Texas Mile one o' these days, eh?
Hell, i drove all the way to Memphis just to meet you!
Remember, you are the guy whose curiosity and questions never stop; that helps me keep asking questions.

OOo electrical. so fun!!
i don't mind this since i have a degree in it, and am used to PLC and robotics systems incorporating thousands of wires and hundreds of ins and outs and networked controllers.
a simple 12V system is a walk in the park!!
i'm in the middle of some retrofitting and mods to my harness now! i love how kawi used 14 and 16 gauge wire for a 30 amp circuit (alternator output)
i'm routing the main power to a relay instead of thru the keyswitch. and i'll be switching the form 1C relay for the starter control circuit for a solid state one.. try to boost reliability a bit on my beast.
wiring.. goooood times.

new harness is in, although i still need the sub-harness with coil plugs (backorder).
gained aa lil under.5V to the coils, still under spec.
Found that the ign switch is eating .4V, that will be replaced tonight.
It was a joy to remove the ign switch,... But, thanks to the Cheeseman's advice, I avoided using the big ball peen hammer.
Like fugging pulling teeth to get this ole wreck's electrics back to spec.

i've always thought of the kawi electrical system to be one of the most gruesome and hideous things ever devised.
thus the reason i'm changing so much in my harness. the bike pulls damn near 15A with EVERYthing on and running.. the batter is 12A/hr.. THAT makes sense eh? at least the alternator puts out 30A to take the load, but transmitting across 14 and 16 Ga wire? tisk tisk.
good luck bossman! sounds like you're justifying that pain-in-the-ass work so far be finding and killing voltage drops.

those anti tamper bolts arent fun. i took my switch off when i stripped the upper triple paint off (it was chipped off in a few places). i drilled the heads off then put normal bolts back in.
once you get it making full power again, I think you should try a Dynatek ARC-2 because of your super high CR. This CDI ignition is capable of producing over 50,000 Volts at the spark plug, and has the highest spark energy of any CDI on the market. It is designed to optimize the ignition of modified vehicles, providing the strong spark needed to develop peak power for turbocharged, nitrous oxide and high compression applications
Testing has shown a 3 horsepower increase on completely stock Hayabusas. A higher increase of up to 10 horespower is expected on turbo/nitrous applications
Im getting one mainly for the built in 2 step, but it should help running a big shot of giggle juice

Hey, just to let you guys know.
Sims Motorsports has come out with a 24volt setup for starting AND CHARGING any bike that needs 24v to start. It charges both batteries and starts on 24volts without any switches etc.
They should be available very shortly. Karl, If you want one now to add in I can get you an early production one.

Karl, After you finish your testing and would like to try the CDI just for grins on one of your Saturday standing appointments, just let me know. I have one hanging out right now with the plug and play ZX-12 harness for it.
Curious Jim, how much do those Sims 24volt setups run.

where would you mount it?
I don't need one now but maybe later.
Gary,
If you have a harness & CDI set up for a 12, mable i could try it.
Have you tried it?

oh, my tip o the day..
for those pesky anti-tamper screws on the ignition switches, slot the top with a 1" Dremel cutoff wheel. they'll come right out with a flat screwstick then AND they're now reuseable.
