ZX-9R vs 954
Well a local guy and I have a rivalry going on and we are choosing to settle it very soon, from a low speed roll for about 8/10ths of a mile.
I'm about 120 and will be on a piped ZX-9R (98-99 model), probably going to stock gearing since +1 got me 165.8 mph on the rev limiter prematurely.
954 guy is probably 220 lbs on a piped, pc3, filter, stacks and geared (probably -1 in the front 520) & other minor insignificant things!
I feel like stock gearing would be perfect (just hitting the limiter before the traps) but for some reason I feel the need to put as much MPH on him for humiliation sake as possible and wondering if I should go with 175 mph gearing. The right thing to do would be to gear to WIN, not just out MPH someone, but I know it will feel too good to go OVER 10 mph faster than him, lol.
Anyways, what are you guys predicting? I've gone 174 with a -1 front sprocket on a CBR 1000RR out there, figure this guy with his weight, make/model will be lucky to go 165 but I should ET the living SNOT outta him. 9Rs of this gen make supposedly about mid 120ish HP but the ram air picks up they claim 10+ once speeds get well into the triple digits! Doubt the 954 picks up that much!

TRN, actually I made sure to mention that no power adders were allowed (nitrous, turbo or supercharging), anything else is fair game. I've already seen the a/f of the 9R on the dyno, a small shot would be fine but I gotta win this one clean. Besides I already put in a clause that should the other rider request, gas tank, airbox and tail section will be torn down.
I'll probably be wearing my buddy's leathers...I've lost weight and my size 40 leathers are too big, he's got 38 Dianese and it fits great. I need to get mine altered really.
I think I'll go back to stock gearing and focus on LENGTHS...I'm pretty sure he won't go back to stock gearing. He said he's hoping to get me out the gate and hold me off....LOL!
TX is a long drive, when I come back I want to do things right, even if that means I get a hotel along the way and S-L-E-E-P!!!!!!!!!!!

you really need to bring a pit crew Ali, then you can sleep on the way there and not worry about crashing. Im not a fan of sleeping behind the wheel, buts its happened... been lucky so far :S
is the use of oxy fuels allowed in your 945 beat-down? might help, but not really easy to add a few percent to the "map" seeing how your using jets.... maybe 1 up on the mains would do it since you will be WFO the whole time? or is it rich enough as is?

I have a 954 and weigh 210 and am geared 1 down in the front. At a low speed roll (under 50mph) the 954 cannot keep the front wheel down under full throttle enough to offfer any race to the 9r with equal mods. Bought the bike new in 02 and would run 9r's every weekend at highway speed, 70mph and second gear, and the 954 would pull the 9r pretty good and I weighed about 195 at the time and the other 3 guys probably went about 150-160lbs.
The 954 does not have ram-air from the factory and makes about 140-145hp if it has over 5000 miles, mine picked up 10 hp from new to 5000 miles (from 136hp). Piped will have about 150-155hp.
Your weight should get you out pretty good, especially if from a low speed roll because the 954 is too light up front to do anything with. Your 9r is a good bit heavier, maybe 40-50 lbs?? so it evens things a little.
Gixxer 1000's used to stomp the dogsh-t outta me bad though. Ouch..it still stings. Lets hear what happens.

----Figured as much.

----Interesting. On the flip side, having run heads up against a 160 lb rider on a 1000RR I walked away from him.
The 954 does not have ram-air from the factory and makes about 140-145hp if it has over 5000 miles, mine picked up 10 hp from new to 5000 miles (from 136hp). Piped will have about 150-155hp.

----Thats what I'm thinking.
Your 9r is a good bit heavier, maybe 40-50 lbs??
----Yep.
so it evens things a little.
----Still gives me a total of about 50 lbs advantage over him, since I'm giving up a few ponies...maybe 10+?
Gixxer 1000's used to stomp the dogsh-t outta me bad though. Ouch..it still stings. Lets hear what happens.
----My buddy who weighs about 10 lbs over me comes by me in 3rd-4th on an 05/06 Gixxer 1000...which pretty much has me thinking I'll get in front and stay in front against the 954, even if he tries drafting.

I had a 2000 yellow and black 929, it was fun.................felt like riding a 600cc bike. I'd just whack the throttle, let the tank hit me in the gut (250lbs), and off it would go. Sure was a nice little screamer...........................................but you got that fat boy out of the hole no problem! Is it 2 out of 3? Couple side bets?

Yeah Blu is pretty useless at the track....except when he runs out near staging at Maxton!!!
Its 2 outta 3, I told him he could pick from a dig or from a roll...more = if we go from a roll because its a fixed marker. I even offered him the hit. Best info I could find after EXTENSIVE research on google was just shy of the 170 mph mark on stock gearing....mid 160s. I'm sure I can go right at 170 when I change the sprocket up and I have significantly more seat time doing this on the 9, let alone just doing this period! The 9 feels very similar to the 12 in a way....even on top....at least proportionately to my light ass. I feel like it would go over 170 all day if I just gave it a little more room. Its kind of a smooth cresciendo of power, it builds like the 12. I ran a 929 there, felt good but it ran outta steam and went slower than the 750 I hopped on for sure.
I'm predicting 2 buslengths! Maaan I'm gonna eat CROW if I lose! Best 2 out of 3. If I beat him hard in the 1st run I will do the ol "roll on, roll off" the whole run through pacing him on the 2nd...for the camera of course...a la pesky mosquito/fly/gnat!

Good for you, Shane. I've been lurking around on your progress for quite some time now and I must say, I'm extremely impressed with how far you've come. It's been a long road but you've walked it when 99 of 100 guys would have called it quits. You've definately earned my respect, not only as a racer but as a person.

Truth of the matter is I just need to refill my bottles, mount my front wheel on and splash some fuel in...about an hour of work. Shane has a bit more work to do....last Test & Tune is this Sunday.
Unfortunately I've been trying to race this 954 guy for god knows how long. Whereas Shane & I have a friendly rivalry (and I know he'll always be down for a run) trying to get this guy to commit and actually come out and finally run me is like pulling teeth....he claims he'll do it this Sunday and I feel like thats my only opportunity because he'll keep ducking and dodging me for another year.
If he bails I'm ready to go to the strip Sunday morning with Shane. I'll probably run a few passes on motor to get back into the rhythm of things but you can't expect me not to spray. He's going to out 60 ft me all day and this is a 9 second race. If it was the 1/2 mile, maybe even the 1/3 mile I could get him back but 1/4 things happen quickly. Plus my bodywork is getting worked on so I'm running naked...not exactly smooth and aero. I've learned from getting caught with my pants down ALWAYS BRING THE NITROUS.
We'll see how it goes...either way I'll be having a fun ass Sunday!

I had a 2003 954 for the summer, that was one slow bike. It was fun for wheelies and such, but with an erion racing exhuast, stock gearing, stock hight, I was going 7.0's@107mph in the 8th mile. Granted, it was on 1 wheel most the way down the strip, but my old 1998 zx9r use to go 6.60's@112 with just an Akro and some straps. I was really surprised the heavier 5 years older technology, non-EFI Kawi was actually quicker/faster then the Honda.
No problem for you, it won't even be a race..
