This is a bad clutch hub - HmmmKaaaaay??

This is what I was greeted with during my recent clutch plate replacement.

Now, I go in and pull out my plates and inspect them all about once a month, sometimes swapping out bad ones for better ones. I didn't imagine that my HUB would be this bad!!!
I had taken notice of some 'slight' (or so it seemed) indentations, but didn't think much of it.
When I took the whole hub out and got a better look at the whole thing on a bench, this is what I was greeted with!!!!!
Just imagine the same picture, for all 360 degrees around the hub!!
Guess 7000 hard miles and a few hundred runs take their toll on that poor puppy.
Makes it really difficult for the plates to SSLLLLIIIIIIDDDEE in and out! Bad for consistent launches too!

Live and learn.......
Anyone else seen this on theirs?

I noticed the same thing while working on a friends 12 a while back. His billet basket was in the same shape.

The steel 'teeth' of those steel plates just seems to 'take it's toll' on the ol inner hub, which isn't of 'billet quality'.

Just seems like the inner hub is made a little too soft.

A big name in racing told me that he used to replace his inner hub 3 times a year!! (8.0's at 180 or something in that area)

I wonder if nickel plating would slow down the wear?

I just swapped my clutch and inspected mine... although you can see the marks if you run a blade across them it doesn't appear to hinder the movement of the plates (..yet) but it's definitely a wear item to keep an eye on. Thanks for the heads up BA another great tech post to be aware of.

You can buy that separate from Muzzy.
I think it was $100.

I wonder what would happen if you installed the clutch with the extra steel loaded first, it would offset all the indentions. MAYBE.

You would lose the friction equal to one fiber in your clutch pack.....

No, many of us add a steel to the muzzy pack to get it back to full height.
I suggest we move that steel all the way to the inside.

That's a common site on hubs that are raced...or have lots of miles...nothing lasts forever ...

ra...no friction is lost by adding a steel plate...

I agree that adding the steel plate also moves all the plates and will help hub-life...somewhat...

agreed. best to add that extra plate a little sooner than the 10000 miles and 200 runs or so that I have. (if only I would have known!)

Ninja12 - you're right also. having the plate as inner-most as possible would 'help' more of the hub and stack than putting it in the middle.

HOLY CRAP DUDE!!! It's BENT! WTF!

Is that damage and the gouges on the backside from when you lost a rod? That was you right, that lost the rod? (the 1270?)

That's one nasty piece of hardware!
