logging ex temp ?

I briefly mentioned this in my winter rebuild thread, but I think this deserves its own
I did a search but couldnt find anything, but I know that a few of you have expirience with logging ex temp. I have a couple questions for starters since I have only limited knowledge of the subject.

1. What do you use/what is most user friendly for a beginner? I believe I want a probe on each header tube very close to the head?

2. What is considered a safe temperature? Im assuming a turbo setup and a nitrous setup would be similar. I want to use lots of nitrous

thermocouples about 3" or so from the port. GENERALLY speaking 1300 is cold, 1500 is fine, 1600 is too hot, 1700 you're toast

I have an Innovate TC-4. It comes with 4 thermocouples and bungs, for around $450. I believe it is compatible with the LM-1 as well.

Before My Innovate Data Logger I had a Simple System with 1Thermo Coupler and a Reader I got from a place in New Jersey for about $135. I still use only 1 Thermocoupler in #4 Cylinder What Doug said in a little on the Warm SIde but for NOS 1350 is what you are looking for. 1400 is about Max for NOS. when I ate my engine the temp was about 1800 degrees. Looked like a Plazma cutter was used!

I bought my TCs for less than $30 each from aircraftspruce.

They are clamp-on so no welding is required.

Make sure it will work with your LM-1. I have one datalogging system for EGTs and another for everything else. It is a real pain in the ass to put the data together to see whats happening.

Before you start logging EGTs:

Send out your fuel injectors for cleaning and flow test
Balance the throttle bodies.
Flow test the fuel jets in your wet nitrous system.

Most TCs only have 4' leads. TC extensions can cause problems so I'd recommend mounting the box in the nose.

They aren't actually mounted yet, Karl. But there is adequate space if I move or rotate them around.

I think Ill go with the clamp on thermocouples Rob uses though. much easier and a lot less $$. save $200 (not to mention having someone weld it, I can only braze with stainless) .by putting "mismatched" stuff together. thats more my style lol. My nitrous setup has 3 different brands of stuff, soon to be 4 when I upgrade the fuel pump

Ok, this is going to be more expensive than I thought. Im pretty sure I need the DL-32 to make it all work, or find a way to run a laptop on my bike to record real time. I dont really see that as being an option for bikes. for cars sure, but I think the tech guys might ask a few questions if they saw me going with a back pack on...
any suggestions?

actually now that I think about it, old cheap laptops arent that big...as long as it will run log works and fit in the tail Im good to go right? I allready planned on taking the nitrous bottle out of the tail, I can move all the electronics to the "+6" part... I might have room....I need a better laptop anyway since only half the screen shows up on mine and the battery wont run it...

Here is a link to the TC-4 manual:

http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/support/manual/TC4_manual.pdf

It has some diagrams, and it looks like it can be connected to the LM-1. Give it a read and see what you think.

It works with the LM-1, but the LM-1 cant record what the TC-4 is showing since it connects to the "out" serial port of the LM-1. to log everything another logger or computer must be connected to the "out" serial port of the TC-4 at the end of the "daisy chain"/ log chain

Ok, If I have to buy a DL-32 to record the output from the TC-4, I could get an LC-1 and sell my current setup....I wouldnt need the LM-1 or LMA-2 with the DL-32 as long as I connect a wideband O2 to the DL-32 right? It will do RPM, and Im assuming TPS since it does 0-5v signals....

The reason I only Logged #4 was I needed to know the EGT Period to set up my NOS and 1 cyl was better than No cylinder. Unless there is a problem they should read about the same. People use A/F to tune but read all 4 or 2 cylinders at a collector! How do you know what each is doing?
