They are spark plugs. Pricey little guys too. 69 dollars a piece for the NGK's and 44 a piece for the Denso's!!

thx Ryan. wow, ive never seen a flat plug like that before...couldnt i just put an extra washer on my plug to gain clearance? (like the kind used for indexing)
would I have damaged anything by this? rod bearings? little dents in the piston would be fine right? if its my problem that is... im still not sure

im hoping its a gasket. i stacked 2 used ones instead of using new ones because i didnt have any new on hand. ive reused them before like that without problems, but i had sealed them with high temp silicone(copper stuff). but ive since been told to never use that as it will kill my wideband O2 sensor......

pics for the experts:
#2 is the worst one, with tiny marks on #1 also

it looks like you moght be just slighly tagging them.

Could just take .010-.020" off the area on the piston under the plugs? or get shorter plugs.
i know nothing about indexing

NGK CR9EKPA: overall length = 2.800; - protrude into cc = .200"

Denso IU01-34: overall length = 2.685, - protrude into cc = .105"

Man that doesn't sound tight enough to hit the plugs, but I've never dealt with the ZX12 motor. My ZRX has loads of room for the plugs even set tight at 13:1 and the ZX14 I was into last week looked to be the same.

I thought I would have lots of room too but I didn't clay anything. What's it kinda looks the same where it was "hitting" as where it sparks I won't know unless I look @ a piston I guess

Thats what I was thinking too....5 thous. isn`t really that much.....But as long as nothing else is going on , 1,or 2 washers outta cure the problem,JMO....

its really about 15 thou lower than stock with the base gasket/ block shim removed though.
so no reason to tear down the motor?? ill pull the washers from some old plugs and ill be ok??
Karl, indexing a plug is usually done on a car, but i think its getting phased out for newer better spark plugs(like what we have in bikes). you use a washer (play around with a bunch of different thicknesses)to make the open end of the plug gap (think old car style with the big "J" shaped electrode) face the intake valve.

Ya, I still do it on my KZ motors...But does take some screwing around to get it just right....Brand new plugs its easy because the washer hasn`t been squished yet....
Newer bikes , the plugs are almost straight up an down in the head.....

well my motor is still making a noise. i put 2 washers on the plugs so i would have lots of clearance, and i used the high temp copper silicone on my exhaust gaskets, which cured for roughly 22 hrs. its not plugs or gaskets, so im thinking valves or bearings. fukk. no more races this season for me. gotta do a bunch of stuff around the house and dads shop, then its tear down time to see what the damage is. if its the crank, ill make a 1350 stroker, if its the head, hopefully it will be an easy fix and ill put some money into electronics and suspension over the winter...Ill have pics when i rip it apart

Drain oil and check for material, if no material its probably the valves. Put a base gasket in it and check the valves to see if everything is good and you are good to go.

If the cams are in wrong you need to reinstall your valvetrain to make sure you dont drop a valve. Happened to me!

It`s probably the bearing on the cyl. that was hitting the plug.....HOPEFULLY NOT.....

leak down!

compression test gives a hint at CR and general health, but leak down will tell the story, exh valves? int valves? rings? both? how bad?

we did a leakdown on TRNorBRN's motor immediately upon returning from Maxton.

95% - 6% - 95% - 95% = bad ju-ju, exh valves on 1,3,4 toast.

Yeah, like karl said , Leak down will tell you soooooo much more.
When you find a leaky cyclinder, listen to the exhaust, intake and oil fill plug.
problem could be exhaust valves, intake valves, or piston/rings.
If you don't hear anything then listen to the cyc next to it for a bad head gasket.
Snap-on makes nice stuff, but harbor freight has one that will get the jog done very reasonable.
After all it don't really matter if you are leaking 5% or 6%, you're not going to do anything about it. IF its over 10-15% you must fix.
