Modifying clutch hub (WARNING) 2000-2002
2 of my boys modified their clutch hubs using bigger holes than were prescribed. I always wondered if the clutch could get to much oil. Well it can!!!! One of the bikes ran 9.38 on first track day at 146.00. After mods, it hasnt ran the same since. Will only run in the .50's now at 142.00mph. The other 12 had even more holes drilled than the first, and his changes were dramatic. After having run 9.72 at 141.0 initially...it will only do 9.80's at best at 139.00mph!!!! This is with the rider doing consistant 1.52-1.56 60 foots and turning 6.25's in the 1/8. After the 1/8 clutches start slipping and times fall off. The way he is leaving, he should be in the low .50's in the 1/4. Its not a classic clutch slipping sound or feel...just bhike is falling off bad up top. If you are wondering..when we pull the clutches they are dripping with oil all the way to the back of pack and have little to no damage. BEWARE of drilling bigger holes than recommended. I think this would help someone who does not drag race and doesnt want to burn up their clutches.

Maybe the clutches are just no good!!!
I need to lose weight, then I'll get 148.71mph in the 1/4 too...

I've doubled the number of holes that a muzzy hub has in my stock basket and can't say it affected it any to speak of. Not to mention I've got two flat spots on my puller shaft for oil supply. Hole size really doesn't affect oil volume. The oil is getting in the basket whether it goes through the basket holes or not. A couple of mph could easily be weather, IMO. THen again, I could be totally off base.

Numbers
Sorry I fuck up the numbers. He is always running a low of 6.23 and a high of around the 6.40's. . I have seen his plates when they came out....dripping oil on each and everry plate with little to no wear. It cant be slipping down low with 60 foots ranging between 1.52-1.55. I do think the heat and humidity is making it drop 3 to 4 mph though because my bike would run only 144-145mph...before it got real hot, I would always run 146-148. Trust my numbers fellas...would never bullshit the board. When we go to Elizabeth City friday, if not raining, I will post new numbers to try and support these thoughts/facts.

My boy with the slower bike of the two....His holes are 3-4 times bigger than my biggest hole on the muzzy hub and he added more holes all around. Dont want to mislead anyone. You are probably fine as long as u didnt make the holes 2 large like he did.

This is great info Rawdog, thanks for posting.
I'm going to go a little bit out on a limb here, but anyone can feel free to debate this with me......
I have one comment about the possible slippage and the 60 times.
Clutch slippage occurs when the engine is under the most LOAD. This means,....resistance to forward movement, while under extreme power producing loads. (full throttle)
As odd as this may sound, the bike is not under much "load" in first gear, to the contrary, it's easy on an engine. Third gear, usually good for load, ditto 4th gear.
Anyway, my only point is that he can completely be slipping at the big end of the track, and have good 60' times.

Point taken, Rawdog. Perhaps it's some kind of funky windage thing going on making it slow down up top.

Excellent call on the "windage factor"!!!
From the sounds of the dripping wet plates, that's a complete possibility.

Alright, right now I am actually putting my clutch back together and I see a bunch of offset holes throughout the circumfrance of my inner hub, they are in a pattern, looks like the guy I bought this particular 12 from had it drilled, and according to the warranty records,it's been in for some type of factory directed mod to the clutch,on another note, shit, this is kinda weird, but I had a dream, and this new girl on this board(HCcandy)?,was in it:o,don't really remember the details(you never can,and if you do,they don't make sense)but at least my sheets were clean!:d:d

I totally agree with u about bike being under a bigger load in 4-6 gear than 1st. His quarter mile mph has always been low though, which just quantifies our statements.
